As some of you may know. In March of 2023. My film Horns was nominated for the Ursa Major Awards, in the category of Best Dramatic Short work. Every day since then. Like a meerkat I hold my head out each and every day checking to see if there is any information of when the award announcement would be. Until one day I get a notification in my Youtube inbox. It was to be announced on May 25th. At 3AM my time.
I wake up that morning at six. I decide not to check my phone, I go through my routine. Sit down on my bed, stretch, take a deep breath and pick up my phone. Accepting fully that even being nominated is a win by itself. I find the awards announcement video video and watch it. Feeling the texture of my phone case in my palm. Sure enough, my category comes up. All the candidates are given 30 seconds of footage, such incredible pieces of work. And when the winner is announced I can't help but hold my breath, and with the most soft spoken voice. Horns is mentioned.
What happens next is something I will never forget. I go downstairs to make my breakfast, blasting ''Celebration'' by Kool & The Gang throughout the living room. Shuffling about the kitchen, taking in this moment as much as I can. Sure enough my dad comes down, and I tell him the news. I show him the video on our TV and we both grow emotional. I hug him. My chin over his shoulder. And I hear him say that he's proud.
As I'm getting ready to start work for the day, my mom (who I had told prior about the event) walks in expecting to hear the news. And I tell her, sure enough my brother comes in as well, having already read the tweet I posted on it at the time. They're both happy, and so am I.

To know that friends, supporters and strangers took the time out of their day to nominate it. Is a thought that fills me with an immense feeling of gratitude. It means the world to me.

I've been watching your animation for a while now, back to "Vending Machine" I think was the first.
Then you made "Horns".
You made me cry. You made me cry without saying a single word. And the play on the word "Horns" was icing on the cake.
Of COURSE I had to promote it. It was, IMO, head and shoulders above everything else you made, just because you made me cry.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, you really deserved that award dude. And your family better be proud. You put all that hard work into the animation. And you got rewarded handsomely for it. It was well deserved and I know it'll really change your life for the better. Honestly, ever since vending machine, your short films (pretty much a lot of your other animations) always put a smile on my face. 😊 Here's to another successful short film. I'm honestly hoping I'll do longer animations myself. I just need more practice.

Je hebt het zo erg verdiend en ik ben zo trots op je.
Ik hoop dat dit geluk dat je voelt nooit af neemt en dat je altijd weet dat wij met z'n allen altijd achter je staan en je steunen door dik en dun(ook al zal je nooit dun zijn. ;P lol *nudge-nudge*). Je bent misschien een misfit in sommige kringen, maar je bent een dierbare vriend en familie voor ons allemaal (in ieder geval voor mij).
Ik hoop dat mensen op het werk ook net zo blij waren voor je. ^^
Nu is het wel zo, dat verwachtingen hoger zullen worden voor je volgende project voor veel mensen. Maar ik zeg: "Luister daar niet naar. Blijf doen wat jij wilt doen, en hoe jij het wilt doen. Maak het niet groter (tenzij het jouw buikje is. ;P lol), kleine persoonlijke dingen met veel emotie en hart als al jouw projecten tot nu toe, is het beste."

You created a movie that brought a smile to my face and a tear in my eye. You touched my heart. You are every bit deserving of this award and more. Thank you so much for the wonder, the charm, and above all, the heart in everything you do. You bring joy into people's lives, as you've brought joy in to mine. Congratulations, it is well earned.
Congratulations on winning. I admit that I had my doubts, but I nominated and voted for you anyway, but I'm glad to hear that it has paid off and it has made you very happy. I hope that we see more wonderful animations in the future like Horns. In all honesty, Luke, the way I see it no one is more deserving of this than you. You’re kind, sweet, caring, humble, and most importantly, a hard worker. It great to see all you’ve worked for has finally paid off, and I hope you continue to be awesome in the years to come.

I know this is an older post. But just wanted to offer my own words.
I’m really glad you got an award, it’s something you can visibly show to express that you made a difference toward people, both stranger and friend. But one of the greatest awards is not on a trophy but in your own heart. Remember to hold that feeling close while you march into your next project. You may have room to grow but never forget where you came from. Sounds generic I know but it’s a wonderful time.
As for the picture, I think it epitomizes what I mentioned. I lived in the country most of my life and firefly catching was a passion. Like holding s tiny living star. And that maybe proof to me that magic exists. And on a quiet night, that’s your reminder of better things.
