The reason is because fantasy developers are not solely concerned with profit motive and/or have a profit motive that accounts for long-term performance of their devices rather than just for weather or not it sells to a relatively un-informed public.

honda did same as they made a sewing machine that was so relyable they lost the market form them self, and then went making bikes and cars after that.

because ancient future technology economy isn't based on them constantly buying new ones to replace broken ones. you see, ipods are designed to eventually break so you will be forced to buy new ones, if the ipod never broke the company would lose a ton of profit.

Not to nitpick, but they didn't.

The whole reason Golbez (under the influence of Zemus) stole the crystals was to 'power up' the Tower of Babil and use it as a teleporter.. which moved the Giant from the Moon to the planet below. This is made a lot more clear in the DS version, partially due to better graphics, and partially because the script is written better. As for WHY Zemus wanted to do so.. well, he's crazy and evil and stuff. The other Lunarians just wanted to live in peace with their neighbors.

That's because Ipods are built to make you buy more. Ancient Mechs on the other hand are built to just kill you.

Kinda hard to tell which one is more malicious.

I vote for the latter, simply because nothing in life actually requires you to buy an ipod. Giant death machines, on the other hand, tend not to give you a choice as to whether they're going to burn you to cinders or not.

What about the fact that the death machines tend to guard big treasure and give sweet EXP when you kill them? Or in some cases WORK for you. Like In neverwinter nights 2. :3
