She should have been playable.
Would have been nice to have a Star Fox character that plays completely different.

Apparently she almost was playable back in Brawl, but they were running out of development time--it came down to choosing between her and Wolf, and Wolf was easier to make in a shorter span of time.

I hope they will add her as playable on the next title, or season pass or something updated in the future.

Now that she's been an Assist, she may be closer than ever to playable. I think it's safe to assume Alucard will be playable in Smash 6 too, cause he was nearly the playable Castlevania rep until Sakurai realized fans might be upset if there's no Belmont. :3
