“… and there we are, welcome back, and welcome to any newcomers. You’re listening to Radio Seven-oh-One, with me, Alvar Jorund-“
“And me, Rheta Parls!”
“Exactly, though that’s not all this morning. No doubt you’ve seen the news recently-“
“And if not, not to worry, that’s what we’re here for! Though, which news? Well, finally breaking the news again, mystics and magics, cos apparently staying out of the news for a month is just too much to ask of them.”
“Steady Rheta, that attitude’s why we got a guest on- say hi to all our listeners, Phil.”
“Uh, hello everybody.”
“No need to be shy there mate, just you, me and Rheta here, and I believe you normally outweigh her by a factor of four.”
“You mean five, Al, I’ve been dieting. Anyway, the studio and Al here have been keeping me in the dark this morning till now to get me curious, so I might as well just ask at the start- just what kind of mystic are you Phil?”
“I am a hippogriff- sort of like a horse but with an eagles head, wings and… well, my forelegs, they would be an eagle’s hindlegs anatomically speaking of course.”
“So…uh, that’s like the big bird things in the Harry Potter films right?”
“Yeah, more or less, they’re based on us. If they’d waited a bit longer before making the films they could have used some real ones instead of spending all that money on the cgi.”
“I’d rather like to see Daniel Radcliffe riding one for real- you guys can carry people, right? Ah, first, I should explain that Phil is using some magic veil potion to seem human for this interview, I saw his real form earlier before we started… actually, here Rheta, I took a picture, thought you might-“
“Ah! Wow, okay, I am glad you guys did not tell me I was interviewing that!”
“Hey, be nice Rheta, he’s right here.”
“It’s fine, I’m used to it. A lot of mystics are fairly scary looking, it’s understandable.”
“Uh-huh, wow, so your real form’s the actual size of a horse?”
“A little larger when you add in the wingspan, we have huge wings to be able to lift ourselves, not every flying mystic can manage passengers, so if you ever want to ride one be aware we have very strict luggage restrictions.”
“I think I’m safe from that.”
“I’m not sure, it would be interesting to fly like that, free in the wind, no walls or floors or engines… you can actually handle a rider Phil?”
“A passenger yeah.”
“Insistent terminology there? Of course I expect you wouldn’t like comparisons to eagles or horses any more than we’d like to be compared to monkeys.”
“It varies, again, everyone’s different. I’m not going to lie and say every mystic, especially type 3 mystics, are civilized and tame. Some enjoy living like animals, but even then, they’re capable of enough logic that you could teach them to pass as a human in a couple of years.”
“You’re not reassuring me all that much…”
“Well don’t worry Rheta, now, Phil, the other reason I thought we’d ask you onto this show is that you weren’t always like this were you?”
“No, I’m a changeling- that means someone permanently changed by magic, as opposed to temporary changes like this disguise potion, they only last a couple of hours.”
“So, how were you changed? Did you used to be a horse or something?”
“A human actually, same as you and Al. Actually I used to be terrified of mystics as well, I thought one was going to eat me and she’s a good friend now. I was changed back in early 2014, during all the hunts and disturbances, a gang of mystics were panicking and trying to retaliate against the hunters by kidnapping and forcibly changing them into other mystics, myself included.”
“What? They… they can do that? Ehhh…”
“I think what Rheta means is you seem remarkably well adjusted for someone whose very condition was forced on them by other mystics?”
“Yes, I guess I was lucky, I was freed by the mystic I mentioned, a tengu- sort of a winged girl- and other mystics rounded up the gang. I might have been dropped in that situation by mystics, but other ones helped me, and ensured it didn’t get any worse. I mean, I didn’t know what to do for a long time, I was scared and in a weird body, afraid that all these humans would just see me as a monster, but at the same time it made me understand that’s what it’s like for any mystic. They didn’t choose to be born that way, they were just stuck with all that fear and uncertainty since birth. I suppose the gang’s plans worked, I was forced to sympathise with mystics, and its taken a couple of years but it’s a bit more comfortable now, especially with people taking about it like this is.”
“That’s some heavy stuff- how are you Rheta? Struggling to get your head around it?”
“I… I don’t know, it must be so weird- I mean hippogriffs can’t wear clothes can they? You’re stuck going from a normal guy to this big hairy feathery creature that can’t talk…”
“Yeah it was difficult. I guess I’m probably more wild than I used to be, different minds work in different ways, but getting to fly under my own power… it’s not like it makes up the difference, but it is enjoyable and people can get used to nearly anything- good or bad. That’s what we’re depending on for people to start to accept us more, just that they’ll get used to our existence.”
“Well said, considering Rheta is once more fixating on the clothing aspects, anyway, let’s get the next song on and we can continues this chat in five minutes...”
