Here’s a little birthday sketch from me, made in 2022, featuring a return of Sirius the Charizard!
When I created this, it had been a little while since I’d put together a complete piece. Thankfully, I wasn't as rusty as I thought I’d be! This actually came together much quicker than I thought it would. The inspiration struck on a Monday evening, and I managed to get everything ready by Friday without feeling rushed. I wasn’t even planning a background at first but, once the idea came, I couldn’t resist. Sometimes having a deadline – even a light one – can help!
Ordinarily, I would put together a story for a work like this. I didn't do so on this occasion, simply because there wasn’t time. Once the idea came to me for the art, I wanted to try and release it for my birthday and, sadly, there weren’t enough hours in the day to write a story as well. However, I may well do so at a later date. So, if you like this work, do check back here at some point! You might find this work heading a little piece of short fiction, and learn a little more about Sirius to boot. Remember that the health and mood of a Charizard can be read from the size of their tail-flame!
When I first published this work, I had been a little quiet on the artistic-side for a while. The pandemic turned out not to be a very fruitful time for my art. As life shrank down to a small scale, and became repetitive, I found inspiration a little hard to come by. But, in 2022, life was slowly heading back down the long road to normality, and I was finding inspiration striking again. I was really fired up putting this together, and it helped inspire me to work on a few other pieces further down the line too!
Finally, here’s a little something to think about. Imagination and invention are such an important part of the human experience. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of thinking of them as childish things, to be put away with the toy trains and teddybears as we become real, serious adults. But, if we do that, I feel we lose something very precious. There’s a capacity for creativity in all of us – yes, even the most serious of us serious adults! – and sometimes it’s important to give that expression. So, why not try your hand at something creative, next time you have a moment? You might be surprised to find where it takes you!
The Charizard in this work in modelled on several poses of the Charizard model in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. The background is modelled on a background seen in the Pokémon anime episode ‘Showdown at Linoone’.
