In this image, a melian (badgerfolk) is studying an astrometer. Astrometers are usually used for plotting orbital trajectories around planets and stars, and the most common ones such as this one are for a single star system. Each one is technically a difference engine and has to be programmed using punch cards. Inspiration for the design of the astrometer inspired by Treasure Planet, one of my favorite movies.
