IIt is still mer-may and there is indeed a fish called the Beard fish (which I personally think is more the goatee fish). The lions mane jellyfish also came to mind for this too. So here is a hybrid merman. Or mermaid. Maybe they’re a merthem/they. I’d ask, but they’re holding that fishing hook thing with some purpose and seem rather busy with their whole sinking ships business.
