A great silence filled the night air, as though all of nature was holding its collective breath in anticipation as the ominous clouds blotted out the starlight. A gentle whistling began to build to a crescendo as the wind that signaled the coming storm swept through the land, flattening plants, forcing ancient oaks to buckle and young trees to bow before the might of the howling gale. Those heavy clouds, nearly black in the night sky roiled and swirled as the wind tossed them about in what seemed a blind rage, a fickleness to their movement that betrayed the violent power surging above. A blinding flash of lightning filled the sky, a terrifying crack of thunder echoed through the field a few seconds later, shaking the very earth itself with its awe inspiring force. Just as the first roaring crash of thunder subsided, it was replaced by the next salvo. Between each strike, the distant torrent of rainfall could be heard, hastily following the whim of the wind and drawing ever nearer.
She held her head low, hunkering down for some small reprieve from the violence of the coming hurricane. Her fur and feathers whipped back, and her sensitive ears pinned in protest. The storm had begun to build so suddenly, the skies had been clear not a few minutes prior. She could not help but feel a bit of panic in the back of her mind, that primal fear that accompanied a storm, impossible to escape. Crouched low, she made for the tree line, the wind at her back aiding in her efforts to flee the advancing hurricane. Light flashed and thunder immediately followed, eerily close now, the sound of doom inexorably giving chase. Her heart raced in her chest as her legs fought to carry her to safety.
As suddenly as the storm had formed in the night sky, the final crack of thunder drifted off, trailing into silence once again. The deluge had stopped and the wind settled to a lazy breeze, carrying drops of rain so gentle one would scarce believe the violence that had proceeded it. The clouds parted, drifting away in an ever wider arc as the stars graced their light upon the land once more. She tilted her head to the sky, perking her ears back up, surveying the mesmerizing scene above. A brilliant streak of blue crested the clouds as a shooting star streaked across the sky, as thought the clouds had parted just for this display. The delicate flowers at her feet had defied every odd and survived the gale, seeming to glow as they were bathed in the starlight above. Her fear and terror melted away in an instant as another star shot across the sky, and another and another, a magical display just for her.
Witnessing something truly beautiful, surreal, magical, it makes one think about what their life has been and what it could be. No matter how much of a skeptic one may be, how can you not make a wish? Would you wish to change something in your past? Right some wrong that haunts you? Or would you wish to change your future? Pray for brighter days ahead? You cannot change your past, but you can change your future. And you don’t need a wish to make it happen, you just need to keep your head high and try your best.
