Original Species: Shangrila Microfauna
When looking through the thicket in the northern part of the Shangrila continent, one is likely to stumble upon an odd group of mammals that live in the shadow of the wyverns. Characterized by long, dexterous noses, these creatures were affectionally dubbed The Snifflers.
The Nano Sniffler is the smallest of the thusfar described snifflers. It seems to be the most basal member of its group; a tiny insectivore content with living out its short life unnoticed by larger creatures.
The Grip-Tail Sniffleris slightly larger than the Nano and more derived. It possesses a prehensile tail which it uses to move above the ground within the twigs and leaves of the plants that grow on the forest floor. It primarily feeds on small insects but also tends to eat berries and nectar. It leans towards being an omnivore.
The Long-Eared Sniffler is a ground-dwelling omnivore that searches the leaflitter for bugs, small reptiles, fresh shoots, and fallen fruit. Its striped, greenish fur helps it blend in with the surrounding plants.
The Cat-Eared Sniffler is on the bigger end of the sniffler spectrum. While still small, it is larger than the other thus far described members of its group. It is a carnivore, mostly hunting small reptiles, amphibians, and insects, but not beyond taking down a different species of sniffler if the opportunity presents itself.
All members of the currently known snifflers use their long, dexterous noses to search for food, sometimes even using them to direct small bits of food into their mouths. It's not out of the question that, if given time, these noses might eventually become fully functional trunks, like those seen in elephants.
As a general rule, snifflers seem to be very curious creatures, eager to investigate anything in their environment that is new... like humans, for example.
