The Niederwalddenkmal national monument was build to commemorate the german victory in the franco-german war of 1870-1871. On top of the monument is the statue of Germania, holding the imperial crown of Germany in her right hand while leaning on a sheated sword as a symbol of peace. At the same time she is watching vigilantly to the west, towards France.

Well, if they were male and of military age, it is possible. It was mainly a war between Prussia and France, but the other german states, like Hanover, Bavaria, Würtemberg and Hesse were also quickly siding with Prussia and sending troops. That was Bismarcks masterpiece, those alliances and the victory together, where what lead to the unification of Germany under prussian leadership.
