"Marshall's father, Dakota, was adopted by a human smokejumper soon after he was born; almost as soon as he could walk, talk and ask questions, he was brought into a training program for puppies chosen to become fellow smokejumpers by their masters. While excited at first about the idea of jumping out of an airplane to fight fires, an unfortunate training accident left him scarred and jaded, and his Dalmatian body's relatively weaker frame compared to his working dog classmates led to much teasing and occasional bullying from them. While he was determined to avoid washing out of the program, the resulting anxiety disorder led him to the habit of wearing his parachute and jump gear everywhere he went, just to show his classmates that he could bear the same weight they could--a habit that will stick with him for a good chunk of his life."
