Also, if you know about bettas, you should know that bettas have a special oxygen reserve called a Labyrinth specifically for that. It is near impossible for a betta to not get enough air: they can take it from the surface easily. There is no public transport here, it's too icy to bike. Why don't you keep your mean-spirited opinions to yourself? I am spoiling this animal to the best of my abilities. So bugger off.
Just ignore him.. Some people think they know everything. Betta are very sturdy fish and do take gulps of air like you said.. I had a betta before this one that I had kept for three years without real plants. I use a filter that air-rates the water, and it works just fine. They also make something else, I forgot what it was called, that also air-rates the water without a filter.
He still has time to get a filter, or one of those air-rating devices (i still cant recall what they are called..x.x.) Betta are very durable, so you should probably relax a little. ^^ His fish looks quite healthy and the tank looks clean. He can always take the time to improve upon it.
No.
Bettas are labyrinth fish. They breathe air from the surface because they have tiny, barely formed lungs. They also PREFER still water due to currents pushing them around due to their long fins.
@Floe, you want a filter to help clean-up, but you're going to want to block the waterfall of it with a cut-in-half cleaned soda/water bottle and some standard tape c: Bettas like water as still as possible and the plastic bottle will create a more gentle current for your new friend. I can find you pictures if you need them! But google is your friend for creative tank solutions!
If you are using bottled spring water (I do, $1 a gallon at the local Dollar Tree) to fill your tank, in the future, unscrew the bottles and set them aside for about 48 hours before adding the water to the tank. Having the water sit will kill all the nasty bubbliness that could harm your betta. Your tank is going to adjust at this point, no matter what, but since you are using fake plants and fresh gravel it won't big as bad as this person is making it out to be. c: But that is from my experience.
As for the figurines in the bowl, just make sure they are not made of materials/paints that will leech into the water over time. :3
Also, here is a site I wish someone had shown me when I first bought my betta. Spend some time to read up on what to watch out for, you'll thank yourself later if something happens to him.

I say this because my first betta was bought with Fin Rot, which I didn't notice right away due to being new to fish in general. Fin Rot can be a very big deal, so make sure to take a good look at your fish's fins now and then for unknown damage! I wish I had known!
If you need help, feel free to PM me or something and ask. I own 4 betta boys (Steve, Mustafa, Loofa, and Bernard) and they're all healthy and loved. <3 I've learned a lot over the last year now from some trial and error, and don't mind helping others when it comes to them!

Oh, also commenting to add: Bettas don't care about the plants. They care about having room to MOVE and swim. Plastic ones are fine, just make sure they do not have sharp corners/edges, as those can tear their delicate fins. Fabric/silk plants are ideal, but whatever works, works! <3
Hope this helps. I got my first betta, Steve, because of my own anxiety. He stressed me out more than I needed him to at first, but the final result is so rewarding!

I miss my bettas. I had a 45 gallon aquarium set up with TWO male bettas who lived in the same tank along with a 22 inch long plucostomous. The two would occasionally spar, but with the fake plants and such, both just guarded their side of the aquarium. They also would nip at the Plucky who would react to the nips minutes later as the nerves finally delivered the message to his primitive brain.
Oddly enough, only the bettas wouldn't be beat up to death by the plucky as had other fish.
