The smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) is found primarily in South and South East Asia, with an isolated subpopulation in Iraq. They're most recognizable for their wide flattened tails, unlike the rounder tails of most other otter species. The smooth-coated otter is considered Vulnerable by the IUCN, primarily because of "habitat loss and degradation due to increasing anthropogenic pressure on wetlands and waterways." Although their population is still decreasing, they are "a protected species in almost all the range countries which prohibits its killing" and "creation of networks of Protected Areas [...] has, to some extent, halted the degradation of its habitat."
