Aperture. The easiest way to picture aperture, since you watch the show, is the iris on the stargate at SG headquarters on Stargate SG-1. The more open the the lens is (The smaller the aperture number or the more open the iris on the stargate is.), the more light gets let in and area of focus (depth of field) becomes shallow/narrow. So what's in focus is clear and what is outside the depth of field becomes blurry.
The closer you are to your subject and the farther away the background is, the more pronounced the background blur (Commonly referred to as Bokkeh.) becomes.
It works the exact same way as the iris in your eye.
