This is about as easy and quickly done as it gets. Many other commissions and ref sheets I've done involve far FAR more work. That's not to slight them, I expect that. This one just happened to get completed faster than usual.
You can see the bevvy of practice and concept sketches I did. My client
orzel pointed out what he liked about those sketches. I hit the nail on the head pretty fast, evidently, so I was able to jump right into making turns. First I drew up a proportionate human (since it had to match it to work as a costume). Orzel had a very good description of what he wanted the character to look like, plus good references of the real thing. So this moved along quickly. As it is, I probably invested a solid 8 hours in this (possibly 10).
