Shasta is a̶ ̶c̶r̶o̶w̶ ̶t̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶i̶d̶e̶n̶t̶i̶f̶i̶e̶s̶ ̶a̶s̶ a magpie. He paints his beak and feathers to better match how he feels... but feathers do fall out from time to time, and it isn't unheard of to see him dress as a bluejay or another bird when it happens. Self-expression can take interesting forms for birds! They can shave their beaks or wear contacts to change pupil shape and eye color. They add bands to legs and feathers. Some even pluck feathers to remove pigments entirely, basically inversing the canvas that Shasta works.
