Fringeworlds - HB98 'Aljarad' Tank Destroyer
A plucky little railgun tank that's been floating around in the setting for a while now. The original description, as below, was written by REALHUMANBEING, and a burst of inspiration today resulted in me finally giving it a finalized sketch!
Whoever heard of a dedicated tank destroyer being a thing again? from WW2 onwards, the concept of a tank specifically designed to counter tanks became moot as MBTs got increasingly upgunned, and the term fell out of use. However, with new kinds of tank rolling out of the battlefield, equipped with ADS systems and tougher armour made of space-age materials, some countries began looking into bigger guns to crack these shells.
One such place was the planet of Samid, who commissioned the Holy Road Auto Workshop (warshat altariq almuqadas lilsayaarat) to produce a dedicated tank destroyer. Designing the chassis from scratch to hold a ridiculously large railgun, and subsequently slapping random shit on the hull as an afterthought, the HB98 Aljarad is an expensive, complicated design, but it packs an entire boxing ring's worth of punch and is surprisingly reliable, being made primarily for the sandy, muddy and sometimes irradiated vistas of Samid.
Other, richer planets sometimes field the Aljarad themselves, as a sign of respect to the Samidi who designed it. Though few Fringe nations can afford this tank, a scant few companies enlisted in the CAB also tend to field the HB98 on dangerous missions, to neutralise an armoured contingent before they can do any real damage.
