This is Teeg, a raccoon merchant/dark mage that just barely missed becoming a villain.
Many people believe that the kings and queens, emperors and great wizards of our time rule the world. The wiser people know that it is the merchants and guilds - the power behind the economy, which even the so-called 'rulers' must bow to from time to time. So it was that a young man would work his way up from humble beginnings on the streets, apprentice to a guild, rise the ranks and become well-known and skilled enough to be invited to a party where he would meet a noblewoman's daughter and fall in love. They would marry, and the resulting child of that union would be Teeg.
Teeg was a spoiled rotten child who was a menace to the servants and to her parents alike. Prone to tantrums and fits whenever she didn't get what she wanted or whenever she didn't get her way, and sometimes just when she felt she wasn't getting enough attention. In a worse reality, she'd have continued down that path, becoming an entitled monster who valued nothing but herself, falling to the depths of depravity and villainy until her inevitable death at the hands of a group of heroic adventurers.
Her fate changed wildly on her eighteenth birthday party. She had gotten everything she wanted for the event - it was held at a lakehouse her family owned, with tons of food, and a trio of actual wizards as entertainment along with a band with a favored bard she had a huge crush on at the time, and all her 'friends' - every single one of which absolutely hated Teeg for her behavior, though she had no idea at the time.
Unfortunately, said 'friends' weren't that much better - and differed from Teeg in that they were perfectly willing to remove Teeg from their friendgroup in a far more permanent manner. A few of these 'friends' had decided that at the end of the evening, they were going to bring Teeg out into the middle of the lake on a boat, where an 'accident' would make her fall in and drown. A tragedy of their own making. They plied her with drinks the whole party and encouraged her to flirt with the bard she admired - allowing her to make a fool of herself to give the potential added detail that she might have offed herself out of embarrassment - and as the stars came out, they took Teeg out onto the little private boat onto the lake, where they planned for Teeg to meet her end. In a darker reality, they might have succeeded, and the drowned body of Teeg would have remained at the bottom of that lake for years - perhaps resulting in her angry ghost roaming the lake and causing grave misfortunes until her inevitable destruction at the hands of a group of heroic adventurers.
Her would-be killers made a mistake, however. They failed to anticipate that at least a single servant at the party was genuinely a good person. Hearing the splash from the shoreline, a sous chef with particularly keen senses noticed what was happening - the struggling Teeg in the water and the other noble children not seeming to notice. Without concern for his own safety or the mistreatment he himself suffered at the tubby hands of Teeg, he dove into the lake to swim out to rescue her. Teeg was unable to swim, herself, and was little more than deadweight when he got to her, having to dive down a bit to get her. He forced her all the way back to shore, where she was provided for. The young sous chef, however, caught pneumonia from the chilly water and the exhaustion and would die a few weeks later, despite all efforts to prevent it.
The heel realization hit Teeg hard. No one found out her 'friends' had attempted to kill her, let alone Teeg herself, but she distanced herself anyway, remembering how cruel they had been to the people around her: just as she remembered her own actions. The event had shattered her ego, and she found herself surrounded in decadence that she now realized was completely unearned. She wasn't entitled to any of this, and she now knew it, even as she struggled to cast off old habits. She was still a woman driven by her greed and gluttony, but that was obstructed by her nagging realization that she was not a good person.
Though too old for an apprenticeship at her father's guild, she had the knowledge and skills to become a proficient merchant - which is what she announced she was going to do. Looking upon the faces of servants and people she once abused was killing her, and she felt there were no words she could say to them that would have any meaning unless she showed her growth. Even if they forgave her, she wasn't ready to forgive herself.
So she left, on one adventure or another. Outwardly as the greedy merchant. Inwardly as a sad girl that is way over her head.
