Simple Dungeons and Dragons Backdrop
This was a quick commission slipped in to my queue for one Doctor Portal due to it needing to be done in a rush for a DnD campaign he was running. Basically he needed a relatively simple backdrop heavy on silhouetting to be used for a campaign. They apparently were gonna blow it up on a projector and replicate it which is...admittedly super cool. Since then I've seen the photos of them doing just that and I'm super glad to see they're all really enjoying the art....even if I made the mistake of going too detailed with the first pass.
There's a multitude of influences here in the design of the city, both by request of the client and my own predilections. He requested to take heavy influences from Byzantium from Outer Worlds in terms of design, hence the futuristic space heavy theme. But I also infused elements of Isometric cityscape design from the old 2-d sonic games, Deco elements both in architecture and the use of 'space blimps', even took some inspiration from my recent watch of Big O with my friend who visited by sticking some ruins of the former city in the bay, implying some previous disaster that was built over. So lots of fun visual draws from media I like.
As for our mystery man in front, He's a gnome/elf hybrid who's compensating for his lack of height by wearing a massive stovepipe top hat. Again, part of the design requests by portal. Doing character silhouettes are always weird, especially when it comes to forcing myself to simplify something in a manner that feels as though I'm trying to unlearn art tech. So I hope I've struck a good...middle ground when it comes to our laughably serious antagonist.
Thanks for the commission Portal!
