Nick: Oh great, cancelled... The one thing I didn't miss about Germany...
Lori: Why are we taking the train in the first place?! We could've just rented a car at the airport, it would've been so much easier!
Nick: It's cheaper and I thought it would save us some hassle while seeing the country! I thought it's a great alternative!
Lori: And how are we gonna get to our destination now?!
Nick: Don't worry, I can figure something out.
Lori: NO, I'm going to the rental car counter and pick up a car, and I'M THE DRIVER. I WANNA GET TO THE HOTEL FAST.
Nick: No, come on, I...
Lori: NO! I'M TIRED FROM THE LONG FLIGHT, I WANNA GET TO THE HOTEL SO I CAN SLEEP! FUCK YOUR PLANNING, I'M PICKING UP A CAR!
Nick and Lori visited Germany, Nick's home country, and promptly Nick is met with something he certainly didn't miss in Germany. Delayed and cancelled trains. And as if that was not enough, Nick now has to deal with a pissed off girlfriend who insists on a car! I swear, it's not funny anymore, it'ss just a metaphor of what's wrong with our country. Fuck DB.

Okay, you got me there. America's train network is owned by private companies and the prioritize their own trains over others, which is why Amtrak is always late + America is laid out for cars almost entirely (parking lots everywhere!!!). Here in Germany it’s because infrastructure is outdated and a lot of tracks have been dismantled since the 90s. And now we have problems everywhere. Also, high speed trains and regional trains sometimes share the same rails, which adds further delay. It sucks to have no real alternative to a car sometimes.
You got that right!
When I was little and before I learned where different trains are in the world, I didn't know that high speed rail would be far away, even being from the wrong side of Pennsylvania where there's no overhead electrification. I only rode Amtrak once in a family vacation to Altoona in 2006 and any other time I traveled was up and down the highways. I was also raised to love cars even though I never have flown anywhere yet.
Also, I'm part German and I do like my heritage despite Germany's dark history. As for trains, there's no plans for HSR in west PA unlike east PA, but I'll just be happy driving an older Ram truck.

Also, I forgot to tell you that Iooked up somewhere several years ago that Germany was also going to have a Transrapid maglev network, but it was voted down in favor of the construction of additional ICE lines instead. If you know that maglev train, they had that test track in Emsland for few decades. They even had a horrible collision in 2005 with a special maintenance vehicle and they later closed the test track before they tore it apart. My side of Pennsylvania once had plans for a local Transrapid Maglev line that goes from Greensburg to Pittsburgh Intl. Airport via Monroeville and downtown Pittsburgh. That unfortunately got cancelled and everyone I know thought we were going to have that line before I found out it's cancelled and nonexistent. If you hate the ICE running late and me not liking America's car cuture going a bit too far, there's nothing we can do other than daydreaming what-if those Maglev trains would've been zipping through Germany and Pennsylvania although it's only a reality so far in Shanghai, China.
Oh yes, I remember the Maglev, or Transrapid as it was called here. This was so cool. Never rode it because I lived too far away but it was a cool sight to see. Too bad it was discontinued after the accident. I guess we can really only daydream at this point. Sigh.
I wish I would've found this little bit earlier, but here's an English version of one of the old German Transrapid films from the 90s. This one was about a now-cancelled plan to build a Maglev line from Hamburg to Berlin and the film uses footage of the Emsland test track with some early CGI edited sections. Even though it's 29 years old at the time of this comment reply, it's still interesting to watch.
You’re absolutely right. America is designed for cars and cars only. The city I lived in back in the day didn’t even have PT in the first place, despite it having 100k people living there. There’s cities with 500k+ people only having 3-4 bus lines, which says a lot about mobility priorities there.
