James Winters was born Jakob Friedrecksson, a second generation immigrant from Norway born in New York and followed schooling where he idolized his parents in law enforcement (father a police officer, mother a private investigator working on call from independent contractors) and pursued a career as a criminal prosecutor. In his time in New York had a lot of success but learned that the legal system as a whole was super messed up and a lot of people could get away with a lot of horrible things if they had enough time and money. Dirty cops set up his father in a defamation suit about 3 years after he got out of lawschool and it broke him a little bit, left the state and passed the bar to get into civil court proceedings.

Through his experiences, he began to take a much more passive and cynical outlook on the legal world, his skills eventually landing him very high profile and very morally reprehensible clients like Argentum, Hexagon International and Playwild Entertainment. Admittedly he’s not the best guy in the world, he has morals but they’re very flexible with the right amount of cash. Has a few principles he’d die by, but not many. He’s learned that the Justice system is beholden to whoever has the most money and it made him bitter enough to accept it and move along. At this point, his law career is a game for him to the point where he tries to see if the prosecution is actually capable enough to put the really bad people away, and they almost never are.
