A reupload of a character, Denme. A minotaur and former raider/mercenary trying to be a better person.
Born deep within the dark, twisting corridors beneath the surface world, Denme was introduced to faith early in her life - but in the darkest way possible. Her family and kin were followers of the demon lord Baphomet, and the first few years of her life were as brutal and bloody as that would imply. Their raids on civilizations both in the caverns and above fed the herd well, until the day their confidence outstripped their ability. Their attack on a dark elf settlement resulted the extermination of most of the herd, though many of the children and adolescents were captured and enslaved - Denme among them. A minotaur's strengths made them valuable slaves.
Denme's aggression was difficult - nigh impossible - to break. She was among the slaves most likely to be slaughtered - a slave that cannot be fully broken couldn't possibly be of use to potential buyers. Even after the crafting of a magical shock collar, her strong will and Baphomet-inspired rage kept her on the edge of a rampage for most of her time there. But this rage and strength would eventually attract a buyer.
A frequent customer, the representative of a mercenary company on the surface, decided to purchase her despite the warnings of her dark elf handlers. They didn't need to worry, however - the strength on display and frequent combats of the mercenaries were close enough to the minotaur's upbringing that she adapted fairly quickly. She was, however, still a slave - and came to bear the scars of rough treatment from her 'betters' more than once. She was also introduced to gods upon the surface - she rationalized that if her family, who were followers of Baphomet, had been defeated and killed, then gods must be stronger than demon lords. She discarded her faith in the demonic and began testing to see which gods would interest her most.
She learned about friendship and comradery around this time, growing close to a few of her fellow slaves in the company. She got to learn of their stories, and learned to empathize with them. Years would pass, and this would only grow as she fought alongside these men and women, and grieved when she lost them. One of the slaves was an educated man the mercenaries kept as a translator - this man taught her basic useful things, but also the concept of 'Good' and 'Evil'. Having only been exposed to 'Evil' for most of her life, 'Good' was a concept she still had trouble visualizing. It would still be a few years before she could visualize the concept fully.
During one particularly brutal fight, Denme was injured. Having already gotten their investment out of her purchase, the mercenary company left her there to die. She would lie there, refusing to perish, for a full day before aid arrived in the form of a group of religious pilgrims. These were pilgrims of the same faith that the mercenaries had just attacked, destroying a chapel in the employ of an enemy faith.
Denme had assumed that they would execute her, put her out of her misery. When they began to clean her wounds and aid her, she suspected that they would torture her for revenge... but none of that came. They were fully aware of her former allegiance - she was wearing the company's colors, after all - but had forgiven her anyway. When they had fully healed her, they let her go. She found that she did not want to return to the mercenary company that bought and abused her, used her as a tool and abandoned her (though she feared for her friends, the other slaves - if she was strong enough, she'd return to save them). When the pilgrims made their intent to rebuild the chapel clear, she decided to aid them. She felt it was the least she could do: her strength came in handy, there.
When it was finished, Denme was among the first of the new faithful of the restored chapel. She had learned of the faith in full during her time with the pilgrims, and admired the endurance of the faith's followers: springing back after their destruction, in the face of adversity, was something she found admirable.
She stayed with them for a few more years before getting the courage to leave, determined to right some of the wrongs she once committed.
