The human resource lady at an old job did this to me once. AND I WILL NEVER FORGET IT.
I was waiting for another co-worker to finish putting mail through the machine so he could walk over to storage (because you had to take a buddy) and he was the only one in the room. So she walks in and goes why don’t you go with “so and so” and I turn around and there totally was another co-worker behind us. NINJA CO-WORKER. So she explains to me that I should “think outside the box” next time. I was so horrified. I could not believe she ACTUALLY used her hands to draw a box in front of me. SO OF COURSE I HAD TO RUN AND TELL EVERYONE MY AMAZING STORY.
I’m not an interesting person.

"Think outside the box" is one of those smarmy corporate slogans designed to appeal to those whose intelligence and attention span can't comprehend anything longer than 6 words. Consequently, it is eternally spouted by middle management types in the mistaken opinion that it actually means anything to those with an intelligence quotient greater than pi.
Other examples include "let's level the playing field," "be proactive," "give it 110 percent," and anything ever said by Buddha.
That'll be 50 dollars.

heh, i just thought that you had heard it so much that you realized it was meaningless. i kinda always thought it was, but usually attributed it to those phrases society likes such as "im giving it everything ive got" or "good morning" which were never meant to have a meaning but only to express a sentiment (although i still dont know what "good morning" is for).
