Just wanted to take a quick in progress picture of our rate cage. Some of you might remember it when we first built it a few months back. Anyway, we started painting the shelves with a hi-gloss paint to help with water-resistance. I think it's turning out nice! We plan on painting the door the same color.
You might notice that the shelves that are a part of the bookcase (not removable) aren't painted yet. xD We're working on it!

I've decided that over the summer, my first project is going to be making one of these for my ratties! So expect questions from me :P
One thing I was wondering about this, they don't need shavings/bedding? Also are your rats litter trained? I would think that would make life a thousand times easier

Nope. In fact, I'm pretty against most kinds of commonly used beddings because they're pretty horrible for everything most of the time. Pine and cedar based beddings are TOXIC and result in death -- even aspen is too dusty and can irritate sensitive respiratory systems (which most rats have).
Even recycled-paper based beddings like CareFRESH are iffy because they are often pretty dusty. Any irritants in the air like that are really bad for rats.
Yesterday's News isn't too bad, but it's hard so it's not very useful as something for them to lay in.
So we just wash their toys and wipe the shelves. It's easier to keep clean that way, I think.
They aren't litter trained *yet* but they're young and we're working on it. Rats can be litter trained most of the time. :]

hm, well over the summer i'll definitely be making one of these then, it'll also seriously cut down on costs for bedding :D
Can you get this glossy water resistant paint at like home depot or some place like that, it's not hard to find?
Also, how did you attach the ladders to the shelves themselves? That really the only logistics part i'm having a bit of trouble with figuring out
