Original Species: Brilliant-Wing Nadder Tail
As a result of a new expedition into the land of Shangrila, scholars have discovered a new species of wyvern. This time, unlike the previously described species, this one is carnivorous.
The Brilliant-Wing Nadder Tail is the first predatory wyvern discovered on the continent of Shangrila. Based on its physical features, scholars have concluded that this particular species is a close relative to the frugivorous Frugiverna. The crest, the colorful wings, the throat sack, and the spikes on the end of its tail (which can be used as deadly projectiles) are all features shared by the two wyverns. However, in the case of the Brilliant-Wing, its natural weapons are used more for attacking, rather than for defense.
Initial field observations have revealed that the Brilliant-Wing Nadder Tail also has a tendency for eating fruit and storing it in its throat sack. Although further research has revealed that this wyvern doesn't actually swallow the fruit it collected. Instead, it stores it in the throat sack and allows it to ferment. The resulting alcohol then mixes with the wyvern's poisonous saliva, producing a noxious vapor which it then uses to incapacitate prey. This poisonous breath has a range of 30 feet (9 meters). The effects of the breath attack include numbness, loss of coordination, and confusion, effectively rendering the prey unable to defend itself. Following that, the Brilliant-Wing Nadder Tail can either fire its tail spikes toward the victim, thus skewering it or (in the case of larger prey) it can use the long, hook-like claws on its wings to latch onto its prey and rip it apart with its teeth.
As beautiful as its wings are, it doesn't change the fact that this wyvern is a vicious and ruthless predator.
The Brilliant-Wing Nadder Tail is most often found in places where the forest and grasslands meet, the latter serving as a resting place and source of fruit, while the latter is its preferred hunting ground.
During the initial encounter with the research team, the wyvern showed clear signs of curiosity when encountering humans. However, the team soon realized it was also contemplating whether to attack them or not. While Milo and Jera would most likely feel intimidated in a similar situation, Najila (who served as the research team's bodyguard in this particular instance) was far more confident in her abilities. Thanks to her version of a threat display, the encounter ended with the Brilliant-Wing Nadder Tail flying off in search of less feisty prey.
