In the near future, I plan to get seven different types of birds tattooed in different locations on my body. Fairly small, and most of them birds that I've seen from my own home. I wanted one of each colour of the rainbow, and a black crow. Unfortunately I couldn't think of a single genuinely purple bird that I've seen in my own backyard, so I went with a violet-backed starling, which hopefully I'll get to see SOME day XP
They are the Baltimore oriole, goldfinch, violet-backed starling, bluejay, ruby-throated hummingbird, cardinal and crow...
There are two cardinals because I couldn't decide on a pose. It will be on my hand so it needs to fit :P Most of the planned locations are written tiny beside the bird. It'll be up to the tattoo artist to decide what to change or alter in order to make these actually tattoo-able, since small tattoos are usually tricky I'm told.
They are not each separate representations of different people in my life or anything like that, birds have just been a reoccurring theme in my life and a constant source of inspiration to me.
Photo reference was used for all of them. I will probably edit each of them a little, and I'm considering redrawing the bluejay if only because I wanted more delicate linework and I drew his outline very thickly, but I might leave that to the tattoo artist. In any case, it will be a while before I will be able to get these.
Sorry for the shitty scan XP I used copic markers and pens to draw them with a white gel pen for highlights
P.S. If you don't like the idea, just don't bother commenting, capiche?

not so much saftey..just quality. My friend keeps getting tattoos and hers are poorly done and frankly..ugly. But now she's stuck with them.
And I dont want you to be stuck with ugly birdies. SO make sure the artist can make your art just as beautiful as you planed them to be.

As an artist myself, I tend to be picky, and with something I put on my body I'm not cheap either. The wings I have on my back were pricey but I went to the best there was in my area and I don't regret a dime spent. It was worth it to know he cared about quality and wouldn't screw up. So yeah, I'm not the type to walk into a random parlour and say 'INK ME' cuz then this happens: http://www.geekologie.com/2007/05/1.....rst-tattoo.jpg
I have a (not so small) pair on my back ^_^ http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3627001/ I love them so very much...
Lol red cardinals make me laugh for some reason because I saw this one rescued cardinal all pissed off in a cage because he got hit by a car earlier that day, but he was fine enough to hop around trying to attack people
I felt bad then it tried to yell at me and come at me in the cage

These are awesome!
I know you were kinda... back-yard themed, but if you were going for colorful, have you seen the European Bee Eater?

Well it's terribly ironic for me to say, but people will be always be conscious of what other people do with themselves. I don't mean to come off as a jerk saying you shouldn't get the tattoos! I'm just curiously confused about the idea of having birds all over your body.
I love birds *shrug* It's not as though someone would see me walking down the street and say 'woah those are a lot of birds' either since all of these will be small and discreet. Besides which, I could say the same of people who get giant biomech tattoos or gruesome skulls with bulging eyes and flaming motorcycles. I find those artless and gross but to someone else it could mean the world to them, who am I to judge?
Oh gawd. I can't look at those and not demand to know WHY?!
Okay, technically, I can't look at ANY tattoo and not ask why... Not because I'm against; I've seen a ton of awesome, meaningful tattoos done before ( I know a guy who tattoo'd a bible scripture that meant the most to him on his shoulder ) but I've also seen a bunch of pointless stupid ones that were "just cuz".
I guess I'm just naturally curious, with a desire for meaning.
Also, I saw the picture you uploaded! LOL, from the thumbnail, I THOUGHT YOU CUT YOUR THUMB!

It's meaningful to me for plenty of reasons, but I've already described them to multiple people here and no offence but the way you phrased it was way more insulting and accusatory than the other people who asked out of genuine curiosity.
I think it's probably just a matter of opinion though... Bible scripture would make me cringe, but I smile when I see Harry Potter quotes.

I think it'd look strange to have them all together. The idea for this spawned when a friend mused that it would be funny if someone got different coloured 'freckles' all over their body and to see how long before people noticed them all. Same concept, only not with dots because they don't mean anything to me. People could theoretically go their whole life knowing me without having seen all seven birds. I like the idea that they are hidden and discreet - I already have large wing tattoos on my back (and there are people I've known for a long time who still don't even know about THOSE or express shock when I wear a tank top) so I'd like those, as my first tattoo, to remain the 'dominant' tattoo. I'm not a fan of there being more tattoo than their is skin on my person. I find it more artistic if the tattoos fit the body. I've designed these to hug or curve with certain parts of my body, so they 'fit' where I put them. They just seem more precious to me that way.
Heheh. I find it very fitting that birds (and animals in general) are your inspiration. I'd find it fitting of anyone who uses a creative outlet actually but you in particular. You tend to draw feathers on many of your creatures. (Is just catching on. Give me a break I've been on loopy pills for the past two days after my colonoscopy. XC) Other than that, I honestly don't know why I think so, you just seem to have this free spirit about you..... Wow that sounded less cheesy in my head... You know what, fuck it I want to be cheesy!
On another note, I think these would be great to get a tatto of. :D Can't wait to see the product. :)

XD That's nice of you to say. A lot of my associations with them have to do with friends or things that helped me through hard times or moments of love... all that cheesy stuff that I want to be reminded of every day. One of my best friends is bird obsessed - she studies them, worked with Irene Pepperburg's African Greys, and RPed gryphons with me for years and years... two of my other best friends I associate with birds for other reasons - one because she tends to find injured ones and raise them all the time, the other because she associates them with family as well. There's just a lot of memories that birds call up for me that resonate in a way that I'd want tattoos like these.
I was happy to say it. ^_^ I love birds too. I watch them through my window after we throw out the bird seed. (And feel a bit like a stalker whilst doing so. >_>) Heheh. It's really amazing that you feel such emotions and memories through birds. ^_^ It must be an amazing feeling. And I would love to meet your friends. XD They sound really nice. :) I can relate to the "taking injured birds home and caring for them" thing. I remember one time I took home a baby owl that was hurt. We managed to keep it alive for three days and when I got home on the third day it was dead. I cried for the rest of the day. Heheh.
I feel the same way about fish. For my birthday I am going in for another set of fish tattoos, which will bring me up to 6 fish.
I have 2 butterfly koi on my chest, 2 fish from dr Seuss on either of my hips, and a pair of fancy-finned on my shoulder blades next month.
you are the sky and I am the sea, I suppose.

We can never be together! lol That's awesome though, butterfly koi sound beautiful. My friend's mom has a big pond out in her backyard filled with koi and goldfish. I sat and ate breakfast with them every morning and that's usually when the birds all came and hung out. They liked bathing in the pond :P
But we can stare at each other at a distance :C
I am surprised that you did not say that the birds like to eat at the pond too.
I had started a fish pond at my parents (while I was still living there) but my mom decided after all the world that she didn't want to have to worry about taking care of fish, I suppose it is for the best, I live in Florida and there are A LOT of sea birds who know how to fish here.
I am really excited about your bird tattoos. At one point I was going to shave my head and have a mechanical bird that's beak started at the front of my hair line and followed down my back to the butt and have tail feathers there.

That would be INTENSE (the shaved head and the size of that tattoo).
Yeah, birds who know how to fish are not good for ponds 8| We don't have many in Ontario, only herons, and the best way to keep herons out is to just stick a statue of another heron in the pond. We use to have more issues with racoons... one of our biggest koi was killed and flayed by a racoon (they left the skin so we could even identify what koi, it was horrible!). They rebuilt a MUCH larger pond and the racoons can't get the fish in this one. HA. Before the big pond was built we had chunks of styrofoam on the pond at night, which the racoons couldn't figure out, but it wasn't very pretty XP

We have herons here - I had no idea that you could scare them off with a statue!
I am really sorry about the raccoons eating your fish, I know that if I came out and saw my fishes skins laying about - I would cry..
The fish didn't try to eat the Styrofoam? I have seen little kids throw very odd things into a koi pond and them trying to eat it.

The styrofoam were giant boards, they could not have eaten it if they tried, though I'm sure they would if they could... I was so sad over Hoover, but my friend (who actually lives there, its her family who has the pond and I live with them over the summers), she was not sad at all about him. She'd raised some polywogs and she let them into the pond. This koi ate them all (we dubbed him Hoover for a reason). He swam around with polywog tails in his mouth for a while. She thought they'd be much too big to eat (they WERE huge, but I'd seen his mouth open big enough to swallow ping pong balls so I was cynical about the whole polywog/koi relationship). Anyway, she thought it was divine justice but I was really sad :( The racoons also massacred a nest of baby robins we'd been watching grow in a nest near the house. Three days and those babies would have flown the nest T_T The racoons in this area are vicious, I do not appreciate them at all 8(
OH OH OH, I guess it - that is not a bad idea, I have a few places around here that do a netting over ponds (pretty much all the time - not just at night)
Hoover sounds like he was huge! The funniest thing about craps (koi, goldfish, etc) are vegetarians but they don't let that stop them from eating anything they can fit into their mouths! poor polywogs!
I use to raise koi (my butterfly koi were my first 2 I ever owned) and at fist I would get fancy little filler fish, like neons and mollies and stuff, but I noticed they were all disappearing, then one day laki had half a neon in he's mouth and that was the end of that. I also had some fancy-fined goldfish and cause they are so fat (they waddle) they can not swim very fast, and the kois would eat all their tails off. arg.
honestly, I would hate the raccoons if I lived in your area too. They really only hang out in the populated areas (apartment complexes, beaches) cause it is easy food - so besides finding them in the dumpster all the time we have never really had issues with them.... but there was this one time at the old complex where I heard a small dog barking at a raccoon and the the raccoon hissing.. and then... the sounds of the dog being killed/hurt by it... I was so upset I had to leave the apartment complex. I wanted to go try and save the dog but it was mid day so there was a good chance that the raccoon was rabid so I decided I should just stay away...

D8 POOR PUPPY! I will say this, racoons are adaptable as all hell, not many critters can live in urban areas the way they do and thrive. But I wish they'd stop eating my friends 8(
The people who sell fish should be more up front about their eating habits XD we have one giant koi now who COULD eat a lot of the smaller fish, but he doesn't. He used to be scared of his own shadow until we got a few larger koi to be his friends. I haven't seen them in a while, they hibernate through the winter (pond's got a little heater and they sorta doze except during food time, or so I hear).

I know it was so freaking scary! I didn't know what to do. But you are right about raccoons they are the only things who get away with being so crafty and plump living in our world. I have to say that I do really love pom poko and this convo is making me think about how they become humans so they can more easily get food and live. (if you have not seen it - you should.. it is a little slow but it is good)
I agree with you! one time I bought kissing fish for my tank and they guy was like "they are so sweet they get a long with everything!" so I got 6 of them and they were eating my other fish - I was pissed! Then I found out that they aren't really trying to "kiss" they are trying to each each other but their mouths are to small. But I guess you have to remember that a lot of people do not think fish are pets, they are just decoration (which is kinda sad)
That is so funny, I have never heard of a koi being scared of it's own shadow - do you have a special name for him too?

We call him King XD He was Hover the Second for a while because he resembles Hoover, though he's a lot prettier... I have a beta fish myself, his name is Vader and he's beautiful. However, he can't have friends... for obvious reasons T_T
8\ Fish as decoration what. They ARE pretty but they've got personality if you get to know them. My mum thinks I'm crazy when I talk about Vader.

A Betta?
Let me tell you! I was suppose to be moving from Florida to Maryland at the first of the year (but things fell through) well I had a 10 gallon tank, a 30 gallon tank and a 80 gallon tank, all of which I gave away cause I didn't want them to break in the move (I didn't have fish at the time cause at the old complex they used a lot of water softener and it always killed my fish.) well when we moved to another apartment here I got really upset and lonely for fish so one day we were at walmart and I found this neat 3 gallon tank that has a lighted bubbler in the middle and they can set it to glow a bunch of different colors, so I bought it and wanted a black moor for it but, every where we went they looked really sickly so I started looking at the bettas. I had found one that I was in love with.. a sliver and blue half moon male (I think that was what it was called) but I have never had a betta before so I had no idea how to take care of them so I just got some mollies and neons... I am still thinking of that betta.

They are LUDICROUSLY easy to care for. I mean, I'm sure a Betta expert would yell at me or something, maybe I'm not doing it right... but all you have to do is change the water every once in a while and feed them infrequently. Generally they seem to live longer if you aren't feeding them each and every day (or so my friend has observed, and atm she has something like seven Bettas... all named after Shakespearean characters). Vader seems to be a happy fish, he flutters at me and swims about and is generally bright, beautiful and healthy looking... I don't know if other types of Bettas are more care-intensive or something though. Also, I do know someone who can't seem to keep a fish alive ever.. all her Bettas die within a few months. She cares for them properly and all she just can't figure out what she's doing wrong. 8\ That Betta sounds gorgeous though. Mine's this irridescent black blue and red shimmery guy with big fins. When he fans them he's pretty much a perfect circle XD
Your fish sounds so amazingly cute! I think I will try a betta the next time around, I do think they are pretty it is just that I see a lot of them just floating or laying about not really swimmer or anything - are they over all lazy fish or something?
Maybe the fish your friend is getting are sickly - I have noticed that a lot with places that sell fish - they just don't care for them right. already one of the mollies and a neon have died, but I mean the tanks at the places weren't looking to great as it is.

Bettas can be lazy. I think I lucked out with Vader, he's quite energetic for a betta. My friend has a betta with a broken swim bladder - he is pathetic. Not in pain but omg, watching him struggle to swim to the top and eat some food is a bit funny. After we found out he wasn't actually hurt or dying it became an endearing quality, if a bit silly... This fish basically lies on the bottom of the tank or perches on the leaves of his plant... he cannot float. He wins the lazy awards but he has good reason. Her female bettas are really energetic but inevitably the females aren't as pretty XP
The Blue Jay is my favorite! But that is because I love anything blue... Im weird.
If you have to choose between the two Cardinals, I would say I like the one standing and looking like he is alert.
I dont know why people wouldnt like this idea, I think it is fantastic. My personal preference is not to get a tatoo anywhere that cant easily be covered up by clothes just for job purposes, but thats just on my body. I think that you should be able to do whatever you like to your own body. You are the one who has to live with it forever, screw everybody else. My mom was livid with the fact that I got a tattoo, but I had to inform her I was an adult, and its something that I know I will want with me forever.
Personally, I would love to get that blue jay on me as well, even if you are not so happy with him. He is a cutie.

They're so great! Wish I could get some tattoos at the moment.. But eh that will come later. Love the Crow and Goldfinch, so cute they are~
Also, love your wings from the picture in scraps, very beautiful. I would love some wings, but mine just seem so complicated to draw to me for some reason.. With pencil and photoshop :\

Oh my! I love these!! I have to say that I can see where you are coming from with this idea as I can relate. I personally adore seagulls even though they are a bird that most people view as vermin. But I grew up living right on a lake so the sight and sound of them always remind me of home.
Also I love how you draw birds!! I might have to try and get you to draw a little seagull for me one day!
