Maniaphobia: Fear of Insanity
What is the definition of Insanity?
Some say it'd be doing the same thing over and over. Others would say it's the essence of chaos. Others say it's losing one's grip on reality and be unable to discern between fantasy and reality. While others see it as losing one's humanity.
I went with a bit of everything.
I gave it a straight jacket 'cause obvious, after all they were used to keep mental patients in check. However this straightjacket is left with its sleeves loose showing that, in a way, madness and the patient are free.
His limbs are covered in multiple chimes, bells and other noise makers as excessive noise can mess with someone's mind.
He still looks humanoid enough, however clearly very inhumane at the same time showing that whatever drove this thing insane took its humanity with it. Claws and the hunched pose show a more animalistic side, as well as tendencies and behaviour.
In media, when a character is portraid for their Insanity or goes insane due to something they tend to end up with an enormous painful looking grin. Very popular in anime, particularly. So why not do the same. Was thinking on giving him spiral pupils at first, but went with the different sized eyes to show a more unhinged and unnatural expression. Bloodshot eyes and the way they were drawn also makes it seem this thing is under the effects of some drugs, as those are known to cause severe mental problems. Also, the reason for his eyes being yellow is because, apparently Yellow is the color of Insanity...Go Figure.
As for the rubber-hose cartoon anatomy...Have you ever seen those toons? Those things are absolutely insane, listening to no rhyme, reason, logic or physics. It had to be a toon, it'd be a disservice if I didn't.
Finally the head splitting into tentacles. The main idea was based on themes such as Lovecraftian horror, knowledge that the human mind can't handle as well as one's mind literally unravelling. In his first design was thinking on making his brain exposed, but that wasn't enough so I decided instead of a coiled mass in the vague shape of a brain...Let's uncoil it and have his brain literally wriggle like a mess. The multiple colors are also to contrast with his more simplistic color scheme, instead of pale colors and browns and beiges, have an entire rainbow.
