My new image for the Fauns and Satyrs mod that I have done for Starbound. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfi.....?id=2580639142 Fauns (females) and Satyrs (males) are heavily attuned to nature and the spirits that take care of it. It's unknown whether nature spirits really exist or not, but the nature magic Fauns and Satyrs use is most definitely real, and they see this magic as a blessing from the nature spirits. They believe it is important to take care of the environments they live in, in thanks for it providing them with homes and sustenance. The nature spirits Fauns and Satyrs worship are unnamed, except for the one they regard as the most powerful. They call this spirit Serinfahnva (seh-rin-fawn-vuh) and unlike biological beings, Serinfahnva and the other nature spirits have no biological sex, so they are referred to as gender neutral. Fauns and Satyrs are normally peaceful beings and will readily take in outsiders who need help and mean no harm. But they are very timid and watchful because not all outsiders can be trusted, especially since they've been attacked by hostile Faun and Satyr tribes on many occasions.
Some Faun and Satyr tribes are brutish and hostile. They have a twisted view on what it means to protect nature. They believe that Serinfahnva and the nature spirits have chosen them and tribes like them to be the sole protectors of nature. They believe everyone else is a threat to that balance (even their own species), because they believe they are not defending the environment as they should. While peaceful Fauns and Satyrs allow the use of the planet's resources so long as it's for sustenance and not being greedily taken advantage of, hostile tribes have no qualms with killing those they see using resources without their permission. They don't allow outsiders to use anything for survival without their permission. Permission is rarely given as most outsiders are seen as trespassers and either chased out or killed. These hostile tribes will kill any outsider they see as a threat, and any member who deviates from the groupthink are chased out or killed. Survivors of these cultist tribes often flee to peaceful Faun and Satyr villages to warn them of the dangers of these wicked tribes. Outsiders and former members who are killed are often brutally sacrificed in nature rituals.
Fauns and Satyrs got their name because humans were the first to call them as such. They resemble the Faun and Satyr from Roman and Greek mythology, respectively. However, while the mythological Faun and Satyr are half goat and half human, these Fauns and Satyrs are humanoid deer people. Human settlers travelling to many planets and meeting these creatures have since called the females 'Fauns' and the males 'Satyrs' because of the resemblance to their mythological creatures. Since then, other sentient creatures have begun to call them that as well, and these creatures have since adapted to the name. They've never called themselves anything else other than 'deer people' or 'deerfolk' translated in their native language. I have not made a language for them, but they would have their own native language and variations of it, depending on the tribe and what planets they live on. But they have learned to speak other languages, including human language (and Starbound is English by default). They are capable of space travel and use reverse engineered technology much like the Florans do. But while Florans have stolen technology, Fauns and Satyrs had it traded to them by outsiders in return for goods and services. Fauns and Satyrs upgraded the ships they have obtained to be biomechanical, so that they are closer to being one with nature.
They are usually named after plants. These names can either be in their own language or in the languages of other species they have relations with. English names for instance, would be named after plants like Primrose, Thistle, Juniper, Alder, Nymphaea (water lily), Dicentra (bleeding hearts), Laburnum (golden chain tree), Nelumbo (water lotus), etc. Foreign plants that aren't native to Earth are also used very commonly (especially plants native to Faun and Satyr home worlds) but I have not come up with any fictional plants to use for this purpose, so I only used real life English plant names as name choices for this species, but if you want to make up your own for your Starbound Faun/Satyr, go ahead!
