Character

Captain Cobenino Ceigh, or Cob for short, is the second captain of the UFIS starship Pioneer, after their first captain got involved in a mind-crippling incident. This is their first ship they captain, with a crew they didn't know. Fortunately, the Pioneer's crew of misfits tried to welcome them into their "family", and they quickly gained the nickname "Cupcake". Their leadership encourages a relaxed culture on the ship, but doesn't fear to get serious when the situation asks for it.

In their previous role, they were an anthropologist, and Cob has a lot of interest in other cultures. They are very interested in what stories these alien species have to tell, what music they make, and how they see the world. It was their main reason they joined Starfleet, as that would provide the best opportunity to get into contact with as many alien cultures as possible. Furthermore, Cob also has plenty of experience in negotiating conflicts, trying to come to a peaceful outcome for all. Cob prefers pacifist options and tries to avoid handling weapons themselves. However, Cob doesn't get along with technology well, and often has to ask for help from others to solve their issues.

Cob is proud of their Hedseon heritage, and loves how, unlike most of his colleagues, his tail provides a lot of freedom to move his head around. You often find them experimenting with strange poses when they're off duty. They don't like to keep the "serious mask" for too long, and will take every opportunity to be playful.

Ever since they're captain of the ship, they have a weekly creative performance session, where crewmembers can show their music and theatre prowess on stage to the rest of the crew, and the captain is not afraid to perform on stage themselves. These sessions have been excellent for team-building on board.

Cob has a lot of friends, and although they're open to a relationship with basically anyone, they're married in a trio-relationship with their husband Keylix and their wife Ayena. They hate to be alone, and has a great need for social interaction. They miss their partners when they're away from home. Fortunately, there's plenty of that from their loyal crew, who are their family in space.

The Hedseon species

The Hedseons live on the planet of Heddis, a moderate planet akin to Earth. The species has evolved from a vulpine-like species, where at one point, the ancestors of the Hedseons transitioned from being purely carnivorous to omnivorous. The biology of creature on Heddis looks similar to Earth, with the distinct difference that all vertebrates on the planet have their head at the other end of their spine. Most vertebrates have developed long tails, which allow their heads to have a large reach, and the Hedseons themselves are no exception.

Hedseon culture has always been playful and has become quite hedonistic once they entered the post-scarcity state of their civilisation. They're renowned for their art, music and theatre, and many Hedseon entertainers are seen as welcome guests all around the galaxy. Another common role Hedseons take are diplomats, or offer to be a neutral negotiator between conflicting parties. They believe in peace above all, and violence has to be avoided at all costs.

Hedseons can come in a wide variety of colours. Though most of them fur in natural shades of brown or grey, some more vibrant colours like pink, orange and turquoise are also possible. Individuals can often be recognised by different fur colours and patterns. Hedseons also have three recognised sexes, where next to the male and female sex, there exists a neuter sex. This is kind of a catch-all term (as it covers a whole lot of deviations in genitalia), but since one in twelve Hedseons belong to this group, it's common enough to get its own category. In most cases, they are still fertile (infertility often only happens with complete absence of genitalia). Some can conceive an embryo, but can't carry it to term. However, Hedseons have the unique ability to transfer the embryo in this stage by a "kiss". It's not uncommon to see trios in Hedseon courtship, and there are both Hedseon children born from two or three parents. A neuter Hedseon parent is called a "nuther".

Hedseon naming convention is mostly centered around direct relationships. It doesn't have a family name that's being passed on generation upon generation. When Hedseons formalise a relationship in marriage, they agree upon the name of that relationship, as it symbolises the creation of a new family. Their children will carry that name as their second name (the first name being their individual name). Therefore, depending on the number of relationships they have had, Hedseons can have multiple additional names. Every subsequent name symbolises a marriage or a very close friendship, in chronological order. It's rare for Hedseons to scrap one of these names, even when the relationship has broken up. To scrap a name is considered to be a big insult. When you ask Hedseons for their name, they usually use their first name, and their last relationship name, even if they do have more names.

Hedseons mature slightly faster than humans and can live up to 110 Terran years, though most won't reach 80.
