Timeless: Faca na Guaiaca (Knife in the Belt)
Vygo, pulling his blackstone knife out of his honor belt - two symbols of adulthood and being a recognized clansman.
When a young Varanar of the steppes successfully completes their rite of passage into adulthood, aside from being recognized as active members of society, they are also rewarded with a few rights: to craft a knife from the black stone deposit near the location of the previously mentioned rite, and to wear a particular accessory. For women, it's their beautiful veils, and for men, a honor belt - a belt that will be decorated with achievements through the young male's life.
I've always enjoyed the way Brazilian boiadeiros keep their knives in their belts, at the back. It's a very iconic imagery aside from being really badass too! So I wanted to see how it looks here, and I dig it! :D
I still hadn't settled on a design for Vygo's belt here, it looks a bit different now!

OOOOOOOOOOOO This is so cool!! I love how I can imagine him whipping that blade out - even if it's just to do something innocuous, like cut a rope.
Also, the sunlight in this piece is fabulous, it has that perfect golden cast. <3
Hmmm, a belt for all of a man's achievements, ehh? Mine would be so big, for all my achievements. Luckily, it could wrap around and around and around my long naga body. :P

Indrys keeps hers in her belt too! She doesn't wear a honor belt like Vygo, but she wears a cloth sash!
She also wears a leather belt when necessary, such as when she needs her archery gear.
Black stone is indeed obsidian! Metallurgy is not much developed in their world and they must do with stone tools. They are more effective than what we think!

Oh I've seen what obsidian can do, even did a short class on stone knapping a few years ago about how it was shaped into blades and tools. It's just one of my favorite fantasy tropes where Obsidian gets used in actual long blades and other tools that it can't in our world, just cause it looks so god damn cool when made and how much damage it can do when used as a weapon so I am all for this in a setting like this. Are they full on still in the early copper age in terms of tools and tech that they are still using lots of stone and bone tools? Or is this just their region of the world?
