On January 20th, the Biloxi Mudpuppies played an away game at Albany. While there, shooting guard Silas Rand managed to squeeze in some time at a local gym shooting baskets with a young squirrel named Ethan, whom he considers his "brother from another mother".
You see, Silas, an orphan, was raised by a female squirrel who gave birth to Ethan some time later. Si looked after him as though his own baby brother. They stayed in touch even after Si went to Underwood College. To this day, he sees him whenever his schedule allows. ^^

This is absolutely touching, C-Cat. The characters are just adorable-- I'm especially taken by Ethan's wide-eyed grin. You can tell he's feeling nothing buy joy in this moment. The arm in front of Si's muzzle is a wonderful touch, really selling this moment as a moment in time instead of a staged PR event. There is a real honesty about this picture that comes through in everything you've done, from the flat paint on the wall to the pedestrian clothing the characters are wearing. This reads of love between brothers and of basketball far more than the glitz of pro sports.
Magnificent story, as well. My favorite thing in the FBA is the stories behind the characters. Stuff like this makes the project mean so much more for me.
Just win your f***ing Caldecott already.

Your fulsome praise has been noted.
Yeah, I wanted to build Silas and I thought of Gil Arenas, who is apparently an all-but-legal guardian to a young boy who lost his parents in a house fire or something. Si and Ethan are a different backstory, obviously, but I think it's going in that direction. Ethan, as far as his forest mom is concerned, is old enough to be on his own, and he'd be ecstatic if Si could make a space for him. ^^
Side question: Si is 6'2". Given his height, how old does Ethan look to you? I'm curious.
