You know honestly, i could see the princess rejecting the tradition. It wouldn't be out of character for her and would symbolism a break from things without purpose. it seems already that most of her subjects feel this is silly and go through it only because the queen tells them to.
Honestly i think "New era for our people" Thinking would be appropriate with these two.

Well, in many ways, tradition is what keeps Crocutan society functioning. Hyenas are belligerent with poor impulse control. Generations ago the clans almost destroyed themselves with infighting, until the first Empress, Djarro, conquered the Maramasai and imposed the strict rules of social order on them, to form them into a cohesive nation that could acquire cash by becoming a mercenary army. They don't have a religion, so a strict caste system, loaded with rituals, and punishment for those who transgress them, takes its place.
If they let their people think and act for themselves, social order will break down.
And anyway--the "normal" wedding ceremony is a superior officer asking, "You want to get hitched?" in front of two sober witnesses, not of the clans of the couple. If the answer is "yes," the officer reminds them "Marriage is forever, you know--til death do you part," and if the answer is still "yes" the officer says "Okay, you're hitched." There might be an exchange of tokens like collars to reinforce the agreement.
Since this is a Royal wedding, with thousands of guests watching, they need to put on more of a show.

Incidentally--real-life spotted hyena society is surprisingly peaceful, because of their strict caste system--everyone in a clan knows their exact position in the hierarchy, who they can dominate, and who they have to suck up up. Microagressions keep everyone in line rather than fights; the only time clan members fight is when they're trying to out-eat each other, and even then, the matriarchs get first dibs, and then down the ranks it goes, until the lowest-ranking immigrant males get to lick up the bloody grass. Most of the ghastly facial injuries you see are from hyenas accidentally chomping each other in the scrimmage to gobble up food.
However, I've also read that hyenas make sure all clan members, including the crippled ones, get a chance to eat. Not sure how that works. Hyenas are really contradictory beasts and new observations are made every day.

Wow, two replies to my interpretation of the page by the author no less! I'm not sure weather i should be honored or worried.... or both! XD.
I hope you don't think i'm trying to critique your work i enjoy the comic a lot. Just my interpretation of there dynamic which seems very progressive at least on brides end. We have seen how frustrated she can get at the pageantry and pushiness of the court. The groom to be is the traditional one and he seems uneasy so you can see how i would come to that conclusion.

I love discussing my story, and will do so at great length and no one has to buy me a drink. ;)
Kathy (and her sister Sandy) are from America where hyenas have to get along with numerous other species. So they're more "democratic" in their thinking. In the Maramasai, hyenas are on the top of the heap, so they're arrogant and think of themselves as the aristocrats.
Fred was schooled in England, so he is more "enlightened and cosmopolitan" than the hyenas "back home," but he also knows that any changes would need to be made incrementally to avoid provoking the nobles, who have their own private armies. Even the Empress realizes this; she had made a comment about repealing the law which forbids males from inheriting property, but hesitated because she would upset a bunch of belligerent women with their own armies, and while her rule is absolute, she also rules at the whim of her people.
So while we might want to see Fred and Kathy "drag Rackenroon kicking and screaming into the 21st century," they're going to have to make changes by degrees. It's like eating an elephant, take one bite at a time.

Thank you--most of the wedding ceremony is taken directly from the elaborate mating ritual of real spotted hyenas. The males have to be as submissive as possible in order to win over the females. New research shows that couples will play and chase each other and splash about in pools of water before getting "down to business," and that the female isn't nearly as nasty-tempered about it as previously thought; she's very patient with him as he tries to get into the right position for the Twister-like mating.
Often, the male will shadow a female for weeks, months even, hoping to impress her with his loyalty and usefulness. The word is that they don't form pair bonds, yet the anecdotal evidence suggests that females are more favorably inclined towards males with whom they have a long-term relationship.
However, if a female is not in the mood, she can and will attack the male viciously, savaging him for his effrontery, so the male has to constantly be on his toes, ready to run if she so much as looks at him funny.
They really do put a paw on their chests, and bow to the female, incidentally.

If this were some prank, I'm sure Fred would have objected more seriously. I get the impression that, while she may be "I do what I feel like" in general and want the two to hook up as soon as possible, the actual official ceremony itself is too important to fool around with prepping for. Those rehearsing and likely already know most of this are open to act out a little more and poke fun at Fred, but Songween needs to make sure that at least Kathy does it right.
I agree, Songween seems to be one of the few taking things seriously. I do find it interesting that Fred and JinJur are the only two who are actually getting angry (or at least highly annoyed) with everyone else's heckling. Perhaps JinJur will actually stand up for Fred in this instance?
