So Derrick (the Octoling with the Afro) used to make weapons for DJ Octavio, but he escaped into Inkopolis and got a job helping Sheldon with repairs. Since there were hundreds of orders per week, when Grizco started salmon run derrick decided to check it out try and relieve some stress. But during his first run he accidentally took home an egg and when it hatched he kind of had a bond with the Steelhead baby ever since. He is snuck as many eggs as he could out of salmon run but he eventually got caught and banned by Grizz. Derek still spent the rest of his days doing repairs for Sheldon but he also was raising the salmons he smuggled out and forever wondering what happened to the eggs Grizz took.
Fast forward to the present of Splatoon 3, the other eggs hatched a maws, Cohock, two chum and three Smallfrys which at this point are just derricks kids, but he also found an apprentice in Dawson, a socially awkward kid who isn't good at turf wars, derrick is training him to repair and invent things professionally though Dawson seems to have a knack for this sort of thing already.
