The Keys - a Whackadoodle Inn Thursday Prompt
Per my usual, I searched for an image to use and found this - an AI generated piece. It fit my needs, but I am still very very uneasy with such generation. I'm sure Bob Ross is rolling in his grave.
As always, this story just came to me. It required an additional amount of editing just because I felt it so strongly. We always strive for perfection, and with luck, we might, at least, get close.
Enjoy,
Vixyy

The mind is its own place, and in it self
Can make a Heav'n of Hell, a Hell of Heav'n.
What matter where, if I be still the same,
And what I should be, all but less then he
Whom Thunder hath made greater? Here at least
We shall be free; th' Almighty hath not built
Here for his envy, will not drive us hence:
Here we may reign secure, and in my choyce
To reign is worth ambition though in Hell:
Better to reign in Hell, then serve in Heav'n.
But wherefore let we then our faithful friends,
Th' associates and copartners of our loss
Lye thus astonisht on th' oblivious Pool,
And call them not to share with us their part
In this unhappy Mansion, or once more
With rallied Arms to try what may be yet
Regaind in Heav'n, or what more lost in Hell?
-Paradise lost, book I , Milton

Some memories need to be let go in order for us to move forward, that's what I've come away with.
The tension was quite palpable in this piece, and I was worried for Wirewolf throughout. Probably more than I worried for Miss Vixyy in Staring at the Stars, that moment when Vixyy put herself between Wirewolf and Scratch sold the urgency as well.
The flashbacks were exquisitely detailed and well-written, the rather local setting was an unexpected surprise as well as the references Floridian history. I double took a bit at the schooner's name I'll confess. As for the ending, it was poignant and bittersweet.
All in all, this story feels to me almost like an acknowledgement of everything that's happened in the Valley and how they can always depend on eachother, even as so much time has passed.
