Paw Fashion 11: 'Korso'
I had to do these sooner or later of course. A dragony, digitigrade version of the Vibram Fivefingers! (http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/index.htm) They're tremendously fun and clever footwear, if a bit strange. The idea is based on the understanding that our feet have spent millions of years evolving to to work a particular way, while we've spent maybe 30 or 40 years making shoes that force them to work in a totally different one, and maybe Nature actually knows what it's doing a bit better than we do. Wearing them lets you feel like you're going barefoot, with all the advantages of feeling and balance and posture, while still offering some protection against a world we've littered with sharp bits of concrete and broken glass.
I've drawn then a couple times before, enjoying the idea of a dragony adaptation of the shoes I like to think of as my artificial paw pads, but decided to try a new color scheme somewhat inspired by the livery of the Monster World Rally Team. It seems like this sort of thing might be pretty much ideal for a digitigrade athletic shoe, where with that kind of paw structure you really need the balance and feeling of having each toe free, and can't afford to cover that all up with a bunch of silly cushioning the way modern human athletic shoes do. In this case the wearer's claws poke through in case they're needed for added grip, the toe pockets having slits to accommodate them.

OH GOSH YESYESYESYESYESYES *nibbles and snuffles your pawfingers and @_@ and grips at them with his hands and toes!* Best for last, eh? X333 And yes, flexible easy-to-spread-open toeclaw slits, for those with claws! Ooh, I know, each toe comes with a thin sealed rubber slit. For those who need claws out, they cut the slits and use them. For those who don't, they just leave them as is. :> I like these so much, of course ;) :9 *nibblenibble pawfingers*
If I lived in a world of furries and dragons and all, the positive reaction I've gotten to this silly little project of mine would have me seriously thinking about trying to start a company or something and running a paw wear store selling these designs. ^^ Would be fun!
This is awesome, I saw those toe-shoes a long time ago and could never find them again. Thanks for that.
Hmmm, I've always considered making my fursona have digitigrade legs but I didn't think it would fit well with a salamander. This just makes me want them more haha XD Awesome work

*laughs* That is awesome! *wiggles toes in his vibrams* Yeah, these shoes are just amazing... only downside is that once you have them, you don't want to go back to wearing normal shoes. They look especially sexy on your dragon. :P Those look like a bit of a tweak on the Bikilas.
*grins* I love my KSO's too. ^^ The design for these ones I think ended up sorta.. largely inspired by the KSO's given that they're what I've got, but the location of the seams and all I was basing off the Flows a bit more. In practice these are probably a bit of a mix of several kinds. But I very much like how they look on dragon paws too. ^^
Nice! The KSO's were the first ones I got, then I got a pair of Mocs for the house, Flows (to replace the KSOs for kayaking and lake stuff), then lucked out and found a pair of SportTreks when I was on vacation in Texas. Damn addicting shoes... which I never thought I'd say about shoes. As for Dragon paws... I think they can look good in anything. :P
Hehe! Yeah, I really love them myself, they're great. I might have to think about the Flows when it comes time for a new pair. And I think the fandom definitely needs more arts with VFFs. ^^ While this is probably the best I've gotten them to turn out, I've also drawn them in the past here http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2715202/ and here http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2261550/ although I first got the idea of dragony VFFs from my friend here http://www.furaffinity.net/view/525241/ ^..^
Yes! I'm glad you shared that link, I've been trying to get my hands on a pair of those booties for ages. One of my friends had a pair and he swears by them.
You should go into industrial design--all of your boots are so plausable (or....pawsable durhurhur) and so very fashonable ;D

I tend to always link to the VFF homepage whenever I do fanart of them, because I really love them myself and am happy to spread the word about them. ^^ They are awfully cool.
And thank you very much, that feels really cool to hear. :) I'm so glad you like the boot designs so much! I really got into making them, obviously... sadly the world contains an irritating lack of dragon paws for me to design for. If I'm able to find other areas where I could apply this enjoyment for though, that would be pretty great. I'll definitely keep my eyes open. ^^

I think
Snapai was the first I'm aware of to draw a 'dragonified' version of 'em, thus giving me the idea which I've drawn here and once or twice more too. ^^ I'm glad you like! I figured they were enough fun that they needed to appear on dragon paws too.
That is a down side of them sadly, they're rather particular on the sizing. I'm lucky enough to have fairly average feet, sorry it limits you!

Hehe, thanks! I really love my pair too, so far they're holding up fine but I'll definitely be getting another pair when they start to wear out.
I imagine a canid or feline pair wouldn't be too dissimilar from these, though there might be some slight differences in shape. I'm not nearly as experienced or skilled at drawing them, but I'll certainly keep it in mind. ^^

I totally agree with your first paragraph. Wearing those "shoes" is the perfect compromise between walking barefoot and not hurting yourself in this world only designed for shoes. I got many remarks when people notice them. SOme find them fancy, some find them funny and some find them ugly, weird and/or silly. I always replay to the later with "Hey how much toes does a foot have? Five or just one big and fat one?"sometimes then refering to this picture here, which perfectly strenghens my point. http://2.media.collegehumor.cvcdn.c.....-giant-toe.jpg
And I have to say I totally love them! Having KSO Treksport, Speed and speed XC for winter now. Speed are my favorite cause they are not only very flexible, but also looking very cool. Due to the much thicker sole of the Speed XC it makes the toe section next to stiff even and thus restricting your toe movement a lot. I actually bought them for some jogging execises, but made the fault to jog in them with my usual heel-strikes - much to the disapproval of my calfes and insteps. XD Now, though, I have acustomed to the toe-striking walk, which may look awkward indeed, but resulting into not having pain at all.
Oh dear I like them so much that they do even have sexappeal for me. XD I can't get around to buy me some more pairs. I especially crave for some Bormios, but I don't want to pay 240€ for a pair of shoes. XD
ANYWAY totally love the picture. ^^

Hee! Yeah, I think they're really wonderful and clever things, and that sort of thinking about how feet have evolved to work naturally is much of what got me into them in the first place. I haven't owned too many yet; I started with a pair of KSO's that I have loved but finally started to wear out, so I just recently replaced them with a pair of Signas (since swimming and beachy stuff is most of what I've used mine for in the past) and am eagerly awaiting warmer weather in which to enjoy them.
They're really nice things, and remarkably comfortable. They do certainly have a way of changing the way you walk, and think about walking. I'm hoping to get into doing more exercising in the future, and when I'm able to start that I expect VFFs will factor in quite heavily. ^^
Really glad you like the picture!
