Francis is Emmy's black cat. Once he "scratched" the door of Emmy's house and decided to live there.
He has a very independent character: he is a cat "who walks by himself." He has never been "sofa": he comes and goes when he wanted to. Despite the fact that Kate, Emmy's friend, insisted that Francis stay, the cat became attached to Emmy (White joked that every witch has a magnet that attracts black cats to them heh), although he remained very independent and self-sufficient. As far as I understand he was not castrated, White said that his territory was very large and encompassed several neighboring quarters; many kittens had his genes.
Francis and White didn't get along at first, but the ten years that they sold together on the same territory taught them to understand each other and respect borders. They did not become friends, but the relationship between them definitely smoothed over time.
I always associate Francis with some noir style, detective cat.
