The romantic undertones of them at the ending of the story doing this are totally undeniable no matter how much they tried to hide up as a mere close deep friendship alone between them! After all being romantic doesn't meant something always sexual itself so there was nothing wrong on them for general and younger audiences and was good message stating the underlying message that a same-gender couple of males could work as well properly as a straight one.

Yes, the movie really had a good message

I hoped to see furtherly material on them evolving their relationship in the future eventually. Perhaps they coordinate to hunt together some larger preys as arrogant proud selfish deer bucks doing that though Gabu does most of the time chasing them and at the end biting them to death, they still get a crucial hit by surprise by Mei with his horns at side or under the belly to make them stumble down and then, hits them to loose counscioness for mercy with his hooves at their head before Gabu finishes them cutting through their troath at the same time. That way, Gabu gathers some food on winter time or spans of time when needing to get an extra-supply which the lesser preys or vegetables and bugs that couldn't help him always all time.

By that time, Mei have grew up and kinda look fiercer and wildish or wolf-like somehow though neverthless being still a goat, and well Gabu of course looked greater and stronger too, having stepped their relationship from a naive pure tender friendship-love to a true deep-complex passionate caring romantic for life couple mates then, and Mei having learn a lot to make a stand on his own and helping Gabu leaving a lot of his former self. Maybe both also getting away human hunters scared by the odd threatening of the coordination of a fierce bold swift-moving and threatening goat male along side the wolf to think of them as something supernatural and leaving out the Emerald Forest alone.

Still at sometime I guess Mei will get some homesick and wanted to go back just to see his grandmother and friends once more time, to make them learn how he isn't in danger in all and very happy alongside his mate, so a new adventure might be they going back and struggling with the issues of the remaining wolf-pack, perhaps under newer leadership as Giro didn't survived the avalanche but Barry did and ascended on the leading role,and so after learning Gabu is stil very alive and back alongside the same goat male he fleed along, then... trouble will return to them. So that's what I guess a newer storyline which parallels but expands the former story into new levels as they're more adult ones.
