On Valentine's Day, Remy Fox arrived at school in the morning.
He was carrying with him a small bouquet of tulips. His heart pounded as he made his way through the hallway.
When he spotted Stephanie, he tape her on the shoulder.
"These are for you," he said nervously. "Happy Valentine's."
Stephanie's face lit up. "Oh, thank you," she cried. A kiss was followed by a hug from her. "You're such a sweetheart, Remy."
"Thanks," he said. "My mom helped pick them out."
"That's okay. Thank you, though." Stephanie smiled. "See you in class."
As Stephanie headed off, Remy felt a tap on his arm. "Excuse me."
He turned around to see a young ferret staring at him.
"Hi," he said. "Can I ask you something?"
"Okay, sure."
"Well," said the ferret, "I have this friend who is also a girl in my class and I was wondering how do I get her to really like me?"
Remy stared at him. "You mean like becoming your girlfriend?"
The ferret reddened. "Yeah, something like that."
"Okay," said Remy. But I'm not really sure. I met mine in the library and we were discussing books and we talked for a bit and got to know one another."
"You mean you just bumped into her in the library and talked with her?"
Remy nodded. "Yeah, that's pretty much what happened." He paused. "What's your name?"
"Damon," said the ferret. "And I'm in the second grade."
Okay, Damon. "I'm Remy and I'm in the fifth grade."
"Cool," said Damon.
"So what have you been doing to get this girl to like you?"
Damon shrugged. "I dunno. Sometimes she likes to watch me eat candy from my bellybutton."
Remy cringed. "No, I mean do you have any hobbies or something you both enjoy?"
"Well, we both like doing puzzles. And we love Lego's."
"Yeah, like that," Remy nodded.
"And we both love fish for dinner. And horse-playing."
Damon's face lit up. "And fantasy books!"
"There you go," smiled Remy.
"I know what to do now," smiled Damon. "Thanks for everything, Remy."
"Sure thing," he smiled. "Well, I'd better get to class."
Damon and Remy said their good-byes and went in the opposite directions. Remy stopped and looked back. Damon was out of sight.
