It turned out my new "friend" wasn't exactly the most motivated sort- all he wanted to do was lay around all day. The feet were happy to oblige him, much to my chagrin. With a lack of physical activities to entertain themselves with they quickly pivoted to other ways they could "help" me, namely by doing all of the work I did on my computer... and browsing the internet... and checking social media... and playing games...
If I don't remember to keep things within reach they won't even let me get up to get my own distractions...
