On December 29th, the Dakota Bikers were playing in Spokane. Gloria Johnson (Red Fox, G, SPO) had come out of deep reserve for a little floor time. Defensive bruiser Jack Wayans (Black Labrador, PF, DAK) smashed into her hard when she planted her paws on a fast break play. Instead of helping her up, he yelled at an official over the charging penalty, earning a technical. Johnson sat down and didn't return.
Just over a week later, the Tallahassee Typhoons traveled to Sturgis, SD. The two division leaders played a ferocious game with the spread never topping 6 points. In the third quarter, the game got to a fever pitch as the offense on both sides hit shot after shot, firing up the crowd and players alike. The Bikers bench were soon on their feet, cheering for their team.
Late in the third, the Typhoons ran an unusual play that gave Jake Velox (Swift Fox, SG, TAL) an open lane. The fox was fast, but Wayans was positioned to see the play and rushed the paint to block the shot.
That's when Velox reminded the Bikers that Johnson is his girlfriend.
FBA reporter T. Matt Latrans kept his headline simple the next morning. The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over the Lazy Dog.
Artwork by the staggeringly stupendous

Naturally, the idea for this came out of wanting to crack a joke about the popular typewriter-tester. But like all things in the FBA, it wasn't hard to turn a one-line joke into a story. When the schedule was kind enough to put the Bikers against the Rapids about a week before they faced the Typhoons, I knew I had my story.
When the ridiculously talented
christaphorac asked about doing another FBA commission (just win your g**d*** Caldecott already, C-Cat), I first thought of Velox's dunk over Wayans. But then I realized showing the dunk would take away from the power of it, sort of how no still photo of Baron Davis' apocalyptic crusher on Andrei Kirilenko's head captures its thunder. So instead, I asked him to draw the reaction from the Bikers bench.
And you know what? Now that dunk hurts more.

Wow, excellent work by C-Cat! And it looks like you did a bit of photo touch up to bring up the contrast and saturation! I likes! :D
Though I wish it was Munt that was involved in that play and not Wayans. That's a pretty jerkish thing for Wayans to do. That's like Tim Duncan knocking somebody over and then not helping them up. Wayans is a class act most of the time. For him to behave like that is unusual, but maybe the game was really tense.

I see it as just a one off play where Wayans was just very irritated from earlier plays and simply forgot his manners. It's not something he would do intentionally, and he probably would have apologized to Johnson after the game, but in the heat of the moment, he didn't think about it.
Wayans is an 11 year vet, so he's played a certain way his whole career. He wouldn't change his style due to pressure from Munt. For Wayans, it's always been "play hard and aggressive on the court, but always show class and sportsmanship." He forgot it this once, but Velox will make sure he doesn't forget it again. ;)
