"Buku" (ᠪᡠᡴᡠ), is the Manchurian branch of Asiatic wrestling, derived from the word and customs of Mongolian wrestling,bökh (ᠪᠥᠬᠡ). The sport was, and remains, popular among ethnic Mongols in Mongolia proper and Inner Mongolia, in northern China. The Manchu rulers of the Qing Dynasty were especially fond of it and held tournaments between the ethnic Mongols and ethnic Manchus, with those willing to participate from other parts of China.
The goal of buku and bökh is not to wrestle your opponent into submission, as in Greco-Roman style wrestling, but to throw or down them as in sambo or judo. That is because it has a focus on "jacket wrestling," where one tends to grapple an opponent by their clothing and throw them.
Shàonǚ is a master lightweight wrestler and often surprises her attackers with skilled grapples and throws, despite her size. When she transforms into Jù Shǔ Shàonǚ, she has a terrifying ability to grapple with monsters and vehicles, flinging them as casually across the battlefield as she would opponents in the arena. As a result, even if one gets past her meteor hammer, they're susceptible to her equally devastating grip.
