Ah, I remember one day when I was working there, me and a coworker were looking at the sleeping male lion and commenting on how he really didn't seem so big. Then he woke up and both of us took like three involuntary steps back, and I noted the head being the size of my chest cavity.
Pittsburgh, I was surprised how ridiculously strict guidlines were, as opposed to that of a world renown zoo, where they were AMAZINGLY understanding.
At PGH, I was considered late and would be disciplined after one minute, and I was not allowed to leave my zone(the only one in the entire zoo with no animals in it).
At SDWAP We had a 7 minute buffer window+didn't need to be on shift for 10 to give us time to change our uniforms, and even though the public transit occasionally made me 2hours late, I was never disciplined as they understood that the public transit was ineffective. As long as I cleaned my area/did my job, if I got done quickly on a slow day, I was allowed to leave my area temporarily to explore other parts of the park(as long as I didn't abandon my zone and let it get too messy again). I was also offered more opportunities to fill in at different areas so I wasn't always stuck in the same area every day.
In all the SDWAP was a lot friendlier and understanding, whereas the PGH Zoo was very cliquish and needlessly strict. All around The San Diego Zoological society is a better place. Even though they had higher volume of traffic it was always better maintained and everyone did their job. PGH keeps their staff inefficiently scattered and rarely allows assists leaving some areas with nothing to do while others are wrecked and "looking busy" and socializing with coworkers was more important than doing your job.
