This was taken on my trip to Watership Down in the spring of 2004. By that time the Great Beech had been very badly damaged by lightning, and sadly since then it's deteriorated further. However, while in the beech hanger I did experience this sublime moment: the sun shining through the branches above to light up the names of the rabbits carved into the trunk.
I don't normally approve of people carving things into living trees, and would never have done it myself. However, this is perhaps a bit of a special case. You can see Hazel's name at the top (where else?) and Silver underneath, but if you look very carefully between the two, on the right, you can just make out Pipkin's name as well. I'm glad he got remembered. =:)

I don't remember a "Woundwort" there, though I'm pretty sure I've read that his name is/was up somewhere around the location of Efrafa, which would make sense. Elsewhere on the tree there's a "Fiver" and a "Bigwig". I've got photos of both of those, but they're really not at all easy to make out; this one was much the best. (I remember a certain painting, too. =:) )
