I stand at the very precipice of solid ground, at the threshold of the Gateway.
There it is, the Ocean. My ancestors and my friends have made this Journey. It is from their words that I've learned that there is Land far beyond. But all I see is the horizon and the looming Gateway ahead. No sight of the shores.
Am I supposed to take this flight on Faith alone? It feels far from prudent, yet Dragons have crossed the vast waters before me. So did birds and seafaring sentient hominids. My path has brought me here, where the breeze touches my mane and the waves spray on my forearms, crashing on the smooth rocks. Basking in the sunlight, feeling the smell of salt in the air, I feel the calling.
I look as far as I can trust my eyes to see. The Ocean might as well stretch to the limits of the World. Should I leave the shore, my choice will have some finality to it. There's nothing but the new frontier, the Unknown, or death from exhaustion, plummeting from the Sky once my wings cannot carry me anymore.
I have the Heart of a Dragon, methinks. Yet still, seeing the Gateway as the only certain thing ahead, I feel a vivid pang of Fear.
This is wrong.
A dragon isn't supposed to be afraid, is he?
The warm Light seeps between those ancient, collapsed spires, their tips crossed like swords barring entry. Never have I seen an invitation to a brighter Future mixed with such a mighty sense of Foreboding.
The Gateway says it all, the Choice is final.
Should I really go, should I brave the boundless Waters?
The Gateway is another powerful symbol that tends to be featured in my lore. It is a passage between Worlds or Chapters of Time, it represents the Threshold of Change. To cross it means to make a decision of great significance. Hence Gateways often appear in the visions of fortune-tellers and seers, the marker and warning of a forking path of the subject's Fate. Its placement within empty space is what makes its significance so mystical, spiritual. The act of crossing corresponds to the commitment to the conviction of the Traveller. Within the Gateway lies the Promise or the Chance, the interpretation of which varies. I settled for the ocean in this piece, since to my mind there's no better representation of a journey with an unknown goal, a path without a terminus. Maybe aside from Space itself.
This magnficent piece is the fruit of a combination of great skill and enthusiasm of my lovely artist friend,
Orisana. She really outdid herself to breathe feeling into the piece, trying to understand its emotional weight and following my thoughts. For this one, the dragon is not the centerpiece. It was meant to be so, for the focus is on the background and the impression of the world's vastness. The clouds, the surface of the ocean, the warm, seeping light... It's all excellent, with meticulous attention to detail. The archway was Ori's addition to my original idea and it turned out to be a great inspiration for added symbolism. I'm so grateful for this one!
All the credit goes to the artist,
Orisana! If you're not watching her yet, I urge you to - she's an amazing person who puts her heart into her work!

It feels safer to stay. For now.The Gateway is another powerful symbol that tends to be featured in my lore. It is a passage between Worlds or Chapters of Time, it represents the Threshold of Change.
