I really liked this story in some capacity better than the original manga/anime. I always thought it could have at least made for a good animated movie despite the series getting a bunch of unnecessary things done to it over the years.

YES! I absolutely agree with you. I've loved LABB since I was fifteen years old. Re-read this novella at twenty and fell in love with it again.
