and I take it that the tip is to focus the energy so as to enable him to inflict a pinpoint attack on "hardened targets"... yes?

I think it's just a bladed tip and the energy beam on its own can cut through most everything. I must admit, I haven't played the games myself.

hmmm.. looking at the design, he's more likely using the tip as both a stabbing device and to keep the energy beam weapon from going out too far and diffusing.. that'd drain the power pack in the handle pretty quick..

.. he's going to have to talk to another energy and mechanical engineer to see about getting that magnetic bottle containment field generator to stop at a certain terminus to keep the saber energy under control and, more so, to a specific LENGTH.. That will save on power as well as ( if he wants to ) getting rid of the metal bar and point that if those are destroyed in combat, his weapon could become unstable and difficult to weld properly
