Aether d'Animaux 2007 - Mock-Up ver3
Here's the first new look at the final stages of Aether d'Animaux 2007!
Shown here are three random pages pulled from the "3-Dimensional Illustration" Category. The larger of the two boxes shows a 2-page spread (what the pages will look like when the book is open in front of you). The single page to the right of the spread is a standard view of a single page.
Each page is 8-1/2" x 11" (the largest format lulu.com offers), and the book will be square-bound. The cover layouts are currently in production.
Please note that the imagery used for these layouts is actual material and is used with permission. Please do not repostm reuse or redistribute this work. Respect Copyrights.
Although I'm behind schedule from my original intended print date, we are quickly approaching that time. Please contact me if you have any concerns, questions, or would like to take part in adding descrptions and/or thumbnail sketches of your masterpiece(s). See my journals or email me for details. This offer is valid right up until we go to print.

To me, the curlicues look more 'victorian,' or 'antique,' while the font looks modern. Also, when placed next to very slick digital art such as the example shown, the difference in feel seems more apparent. Could be that they work better on other pages. And of course, this is just my opinion. :"D
The traditional or antique look you reference was very much intentional, since I'm trying to draw (excuse the pun) upon the sense of classicism. I want this book and thus the art inside to look well-founded.
BUT, I think you're right. Although they are a further leap when juxtaposed beside the 3D Illustration work which is always so polished and candied, they are out of place. And even with the Traditional category, I think I can do something better.
I have another idea which is better suited I think. Be on the look out for a new comp!
Thanks again!

Those are good candidates then! In my own vocabulary, I class those as slick "Pinstripe" fonts, although Optima now reminds me of church signs after so many clients have requested it.
I think the bottom corner ornaments work well, although the bottom rule doesn't seem to jive as much with that element.

And what are we artists if not the collective of our esoteric vocabularies? Hehe.
Thanks for the input. I think you and Thomas have convinced me to shoot for a modern look. I had wanted to lean on the feeling of Classicism, but that really can't apply here and forcing it will look... forced.
As such, I'll probably be changing the fonts to sans-serif families.

Aether is not an invitation-only event, so anyone who wants to contribute can do so. I've been posting and campaigning for Aether since July of 2006, but obviously, I have not reached everyone. I can only rely on word of mouth, which seems to be picking up pace.
The 2007 edition is currently being assembled (as seen above), and I'll be opening the Call for Entries for the 2008 edition in a few months. I have to get this edition collected before I can open a newedition.
All of the artwork submitted to this project is reviewed by a Jury. The purpose of the Jury is to help me decide which pieces best represent the ideal Aether is trying tp promote. As a PG13 publication, it's important to review everything for adult content etc. More details are available on the Aether web site, and in my journals.
