"I am a rocker! I am a roller! I am an out-of-controller! The mighty hand of vengeance, sent down to strike the unroadworthy! Hotter than a rollin' dice! Step right up, chum, and watch the kid lay down a rubber road, right to FREEDOM!"
So I really enjoyed this one! I was in a real smash-em-up car chase movie sort of mood one day when this one popped to mind, the likes of Mad Max, Vanishing Point, Smokey and the Bandit, Death Proof (how have so many Tarantino fans that I know never seen that one?), and probably a very heavy dose of the music video for Stylo. Stayed tuned for the grindhouse edit coming soon!
Also I wanted to give a shoutout to
whiteleonard for giving some cool inspiration with his fury Road picture. I saw he created sort of a 3D effect near the edges of the picture to create a bit more action into the picture and I just thought that was a super cool technique so I....well, just stole it.

It definitely isn't his best film, I'd agree with Tarantino in that it is his worst film. But by all means it isn't a bad film per se. It pays fantastic homage to the 70's and 80's b-grade slasher, it's got lots of fun scenes (like the car chase with Zoe Bell on the bonnet), and his usual bloody violence (like the car crash scene). I think it gets forgotten more because it does really cater to more of a niche audience (compared to some of his other films which have a bit more broader appeal), and also it being part of the Grindhouse Project too compared to being a solo project. Though now I really wanna watch it again xD So thanks! :D
"Hey, Pam, remember when I said this car was death proof? Well, that wasn't a lie. This car is 100% death proof. Only to get the benefit of it, honey, you REALLY need to be sitting in my seat."

I'd agree that it's not his BEST film. Definitely not. But for me personally, I think it's not the worst, but then I've always been sort of a fan of the stunt man heavy, smash-em-up kind of flicks. Is it's pacing bad? Yeah kinda, it's slow as hell for most of the movie, but I feel like the few payoff scenes it does have are well worth it. I remember being in the theater when Zoe was on the hood of the car white knuckling my seat and having to remind myself that it's all safe, she's got wires holding her on, don't worry. Then like clockwork I left the theater and there was some show on the radio in the car talking about the movie and pointing out that they didn't use any wires for that scene and I started white knuckling it all over again replaying it in my mind, lol. fucking INSANE! And I loved the "I'm okay" bit. Everyone in the place burst out laughing because we were all so tense that we needed him to sort of "pop the balloon", as it were. And then that ending, which I won't spoil for anyone reading, SUCH a good payoff, it was worth the slog.
Compare that to Once Upon A Time In Hollywood which.....I'll admit I've only watched it once so far, maybe that's my problem, but I felt like that was a 2.5 hour buildup to....kind of a good fight scene I guess? I felt like it wasn't worth the time I'd put into it. And it won Oscars so I feel like I MUST be missing something, but comparing the two, I know which one I'd put on again, heh.

I'd agree with that assessment of Death Proof, and yeah, the slowness and pacing issues are major, but it would also stem from it being that homage to the 70's b-grade slasher. And that scene with Zoe on the car is fantastic, so well filmed and a great action sequence :D I met Zoe and asked her about that scene, though I won't say what she told me if you don't want to. She was so fun and chill.
As for Once Upon A Time in Holly, I love the movie, but for a different reason. There's no story or plot, and sure, it's a a massive wank fest to the 60's and Hollywood at the time. But I liked how it simply showed the day-to-day lives of the characters: their highs, lows, struggles and triumphs, their memories, their goals, their dreams. There was something enjoyable about witnessing a day in their life, and knowing that there are people who do have those sort of days. And then the end was pretty baller! That's my take on that film anyway.

YOU GOT TO TALK TO ZOE BELL!?!?! Ooooooohh man, I am so curious what she said, lol. Though for the sake of not posting spoilers on here, which I can be very particular about, maybe send a note? Or if you have telegram, you seem like a good person to talk movies with so I'd be open to that as well.
