Mate? No, Hilde and Adrian aren't a couple at this point in the story. Hilde's just trying to be nice to someone who is -really- down on their luck. Divorced, kid, limited income, no place to stay...
And Adrian? Doesn't want to feel like she's a burden, taking advantage of anyone...

Child support doesn't require marriage. It DOES require not boinking so many dudes that you can't identify your kid's dad. It was never mentioned, but is it a possibility that Adrian's ex wasn't the only kangaroo she'd been having sex with? He DID make her do other dudes, right? Be kinda weird to not have at least 1 other person of your own species as a friend. Many naive women get knocked up and left and for some reason think they can't get child support unless they were married and divorced the kid's dad (which you'd THINK would curb oow births).
