In the fictional country of Normen, bats are discriminated against. Wolves and foxes are seen as the “highest class” and the “most advanced race”. In 2035, a fruit bat girl named Nameri is born to parents Hrainda and Pierre. Hrainda is incarcerated after discrimination leads to her being framed for aggravated assault, and from then on, Pierre became overprotective of Nameri, and told her to pretend to be a reindeer. He got her fake hoof shoes as well as nub antler headbands, and got her a puffy coat to tuck her wings under, even when it was summertime. As for her fangs, she was told to avoid looking directly at other people so that no one would see them.

One day at middle school, Pierre is called and told that Nameri “was trying to scare her classmates”. He came to the principal and was told that Nameri looked up at one of her classmates and they screamed, saying that “Nameri is a vampire”. The principal explained that she was “wearing fake vampire fangs to scare her classmates”. Pierre apologised on Nameri’s behalf, took her hand, and as soon as they got home,
Nameri’s coat was taken off, and she was shouted at by her father, who said that she could have been killed if one of the kids dared to tug on her coat. She tried to explain that the kid had called her over, but he wouldn’t listen, and told her that if natural selection ever took course in their family, she wouldn’t survive.

Tears began forming in her emerald green eyes. She was sent to her room, where she began to cry. It went from mild weeping to full-on sobbing within minutes. She grabbed a knife and tried to cut off her wings, but it only resulted in scars on her wings. She discovered a necklace with a red gem in a closet, put it on, and escaped the house through the window. She was going to make a change.
